Vanderburg Wins 300th Game at WT as No. 9/13 Buffs Defeat UT Permian Basin, 10-1

THE BASICS:
  • Score: #9/13 West Texas A&M 10, UT Permian Basin 1

  • Location: Odessa, Texas (Ted & Jan Roden Baseball Field)
  • The Lead: Behind a pair of home runs from junior Christian Loya, the No. 9/13 West Texas A&M baseball team opened a four-game, Lone Star Conference series with a 10-1 win at UT Permian Basin Thursday afternoon. WT head coach Matt Vanderburg won his 300th game at the helm of the Buffs as WT ran its winning streak to six games.


HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Buffs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior Jimmy Cubillos laced a one out double to left center and then senior Luis Amaro drove him home with a double to left center.
  • Loya singled through the left side, moving Amaro to third and senior Nick Canas scored Amaro with a single though the right side as WT tallied four-straight hits for the 2-0 lead.
  • Following the first inning, the Buffs' bats went cold as UTPB starter Andrew Loudermilk retired 11-straight before Cubillos was plunked with a pitch with two out in the top of the fifth.Amaro came up with his second hit of the game putting runners at first and third as the Buffs looked to add to their lead, as Loya belted his fourth home run of the season for a 5-0 lead with the hit batsmen coming back to haunt the Falcons as it extended the frame.
  • Following a leadoff single by the Falcons in the bottom of the inning, WT junior hurler Joe Corbett navigated the inning, retiring two by ground out and fanned the third for his fifth strikeout of the game.
  • A two out double from Alexander Wixson prolonged the bottom of sixth for the Falcons as it marked the third extra-base hit for UTPB for the game, but Corbett came back with his sixth strikeout to end the frame on a 3-2 count.
  • Matt Williams replaced Loudermik in the top of the seventh as Loudermilk went six innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs, walked none and fanned three.
  • With one out in the seventh, following a single from senior Bodie Bryan, Cubillos singled to center, plating Bryan for a 6-0 lead.A single from Amaro and a hit batsman for Loya loaded the bases as UTPB went to the bullpen in favor of Cale Thornton.Following the change, Canas hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead and back-to-back hit batsmen made the score 8-0.
  • A RBI single from Andrew Donovan got the Falcons on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Corbett got out of the jam with just one run scored.
  • Following a three-up-three-down top of the eighth for the Buffs, junior Andrew Schwulst relieved Corbett, as he made his third appearance of the season.Corbett went seven innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned seven.
  • Schwulst retired the first two batters and a single to left followed, but Schwulst got his first strikeout as a Buff to end the inning.
  • Loya belted his second home run of the game for a 10-1 lead with nobody out in the top of the ninth.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Schwulst fanned two leaving a man stranded to end the game.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Loya went 3 for 4 in the game with two run scored and five RBI, while recording two home runs for the first time since his freshman year against Oklahoma Christian.
  • Amaro went 2 for 3 with a team-high four runs scored and one RBI, while Canas was 2 for 4 with two RBI.
  • The top five batters in the lineup combined for 10 of the 11 hits in the game for the Buffs.
  • Corbett improved to 6-1 on the year, while Loudermilk fell to
  • Schwulst went the final two innings, allowing two hits and fanned three.
  • Vanderburg improved to 300-198 (.602) in his tenth season at WT and is 399-265 (.601) overall in 13 years of coaching.He is the winningest coach in WT baseball history.
  • WT recorded ten runs on 11 hits marking the 11th time this season scoring double-digit runs, while UTPB had one run on eight hits with one error.Four of the Falcons' eight hits were doubles.
  • UTPB's Mitchell Hazlett went 2 for 3 with two doubles, while Donovan scored the lone run of the game for the Falcons.
