No. 23 Buffs Split Doubleheader with No. 30 Angelo State Saturday

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #23 West Texas A&M 5-2, #30 Angelo State 4-4
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 17-7, Angelo State 19-6
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: The No. 23 West Texas A&M baseball team used a walk-off single from sophomore Darius Carter for a thrilling 5-4 win in extra innings in the opener of a doubleheader against No. 30 Angelo State Saturday.  The Rams came back with a 4-2 win in the nightcap for a 2-1 series lead heading into tomorrow's finale.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
 
  • Angelo State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second and Elias Aguirre grounded out to third to plate a run.From there, Michael Urquidi, who went 4 for 4 last night, tallied a two RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Rams added the fourth run of the game with a double from Jacob Boston and then a single through the left side by Alex Salcido inbbb the third and a 4-0 lead.
  • The Buffs put two on with nobody out in the bottom of the third for their first serious opportunity in the game.Senior Jimmy Cubillos came up with a 3-2 count single through the left side for a RBI getting the Buffs on the board.
  • A sacrifice bunt from senior Luis Amaro moved the runners to second and third with one away following a mound meeting from the Rams.An infield fly out and a ground out ended the threat as WT left two stranded.
  • WT turned the second twin killing of the game in the top of the fourth and runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the inning.The Buffs plated a run on a throwing error by the catcher back to third as junior Nick Guaragna scored for a 4-2 deficit.
  • A pair of two out singles put runners on second and third for the Buffs in the bottom of the fifth as the Rams made a move to the bullpen in favor of Jared Velasco replacing starter Shane Browning.
  • Velasco made on pitch as the Buffs flew out to short right field to end the threat as the team left seven stranded through five innings.
  • Senior Noah Draper replaced Larison to begin the top of the sixth as Larison went five innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, walked four and fanned six.
  • A walk, stolen base and passed ball put a runner at third for the Rams in the sixth as Draper walked back-to-back hitters as the Buffs had a meeting at the mound. Following a walk to lead the bases, the Buffs made a move to the bullpen as senior Tate Huebner replaced Draper.
  • On the first pitch, a come backer and fielder's choice out to home got the second out and a ground out got WT out of the jam as ASU left the bags full.
  • A walk and single chased Velasco from the game in favor of Kellen Rholl with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the sixth.A nice sacrifice bunt from junior Justice Nakagawa moved the runners to second and third with one away.
  • Rholl came up with a strikeout and a ground out to third ended the inning.
  • Huebner retired the Rams in order in the seventh giving WT one last at bat in the bottom of the frame.
  • A one out single and a pinch-hit home run from senior Brandon Marrero tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.
  • A single to right by junior Tag Baxter put the winning run at first, but a double play ended the inning sending the game to extra-innings.
  • Junior Dominic Yearego retired the Rams in order in the eighth and had the winning run at first, but the Rams got out of it sending the game to the ninth.
  • After two quick outs, back-to-back singles from Marraro and junior Blake Weaver put two on for the Buffs with the winning run in scoring position.
  • Sophomore Darius Carter came up with a single up the middle for a 5-4 walk-off win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE):
 
  • The Buffs had five runs on 17 hits in the game, while ASU had four runs on five hits and one error.
  • Six different Buffs had two hits in the game as Marrero went 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored, along with a home run.
  • Angelo State had five players with one hit each, as Urquidi went 1 for 5 with two RBI.
  • Yearego (2-0) took the win in relief, while Kellen Rholl (2-1) took the loss for the Rams.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):
 
  • In the nightcap, the Rams took the early lead in the first with a ground-rule RBI double to center from Jacob Boston for a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • The Buffs came back in the bottom of the frame, helped out by a miscue from the Rams, as Cubillos advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt after drawing a walk.He scored on a throwing error for the second miscue of the inning and a 1-1 score.
  • ASU took the lead in the third on a throwing error by WT for a 2-1 lead, but the Buffs had the answer once again on an Amaro RBI double to left center for a 2-2 score.
  • Two errors proved costly for the Buffs in the sixth as ASU plated the two winning runs in the frame as the inning began with an error and Trevor Moses later scored on a wild pitch and then Elias Aguirre singled home a r un for a 4-2 score.
  • WT had a chance in the bottom of the seventh with a one out strikeout for Marrero, who reached first on a wild pitch on the strikeout.ASU pitcher, Shannon Broussard, pitched the frame and got a strikeout and ground out to end the game for his first save of the season.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME TWO):
 
  • WT committed five errors in the game with two runs and two hits.ASU had four run on six hits with two errors as both teams had one earned and one unearned run.
  • Amaro had one of two hits for the Buffs and drove in a run, while Nakagawa had a RBI for the second half on 1 of 2.
  • Six different Rams had hits for ASU as Jonathan Soberanes walked twice, while Aguirre and Boston each drove in runs.
  • Buffalo junior starter Zach Dixon went three innings, allowing one hit, two runs – one earned, three walks and three strikeouts.He didn't factor into the decision,
  • Trent Baker (3-0) took the win as he went six innings, allowing two hits, two runs –one earned, walked three and fanned three.
  • Baker took the loss for the Buffs (3-2) as he went four innings, allowing five hits, two runs – one earned, walked one and fanned three.

  • The Buffs and Rams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with a single game.
