#25 Lady Buffs Head to Lawton for Thursday Night Lone Star Conference Action

CANYON, Texas – 
The #25 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M continue Lone Star Confernce action on Thursday night as they travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to face off with the Aggies of Cameron University with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. at Aggie Gymnasium.
 
CAMERON
Cameron is guided by second year head coach Emma Andrews who served as CU's top assistant for two seasons before taking over the program on May 11, 2016. Andrews played collegiately at Fresno State where he helped the Bulldogs to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
 
The Aggies enter the weekend with an overall record of 9-13 with a 7-7 mark in Lone Star Conference play following a 92-91 triple overtime home win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday. Cameron is coming off of an 11-16 campaign in 2016-17 as they went 9-11 in Lone Star Conference play to advance to the LSC Quarterfinals.
 
Jamie Bonnarens leads the way offensively for the Aggies as the sophomore has gone 141-of-356 from the floor including 32-of-96 from deep and 67-of-86 from the free throw line to average 18.1points per game lead the LSC in scoring.
 
WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL
The Lady Buffs remained number twenty five in the newest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Tuesday afternoon by the association's offices in Luling, Georgia.
 
Ashland (22-0) picked up all 24 possible first place votes for a total of 600 points followed by Lubbock Christian (575), Carson Newman (544), Central Missouri (508), Augustana (495), Alaska Anchorage (447), Bentley (430), Drury (403), Virginia Union (396) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (395) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by Lubbock Christian (2nd), West Texas A&M (25th) and Colorado State-Pueblo (RV).
 
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
Entering the week, the Lady Buffs rank second in the nation in field goal percentage (48.65%), field goal percentage defense (33.0%), rebounding margin (+11.5) and scoring defense (51.9/game). WT also ranks in the Top-20 in assists per game (15th, 17.7), total assists (15th, 389), scoring margin (15th, +18.0) and three point field goal perecentage (17th, 37.0%). Junior guard Megan Gambe ranks 17th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio (2.19) while Lexy Hightower is 11th in 3-PT field goal percentage (44.3%).
 
WT IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Lady Buffs improved to 35-23 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the 35 wins ranking sixth-most all-time in NCAA Division II and ranks fourth-most among active DII institutions. In the four-straight NCAA tournament appearances for WT, the Lady Buffs are 13-4 during the stretch.
 
WINNING TRADITION
The 2016-17 season marked the fifth-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT has won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 28 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.
 
Since the 2012-13 season, WT is 151-34 (.816) with four NCAA postseason appearances, a national runner-up finish (2014), three Elite Eight trips (2014, 2015, 2017) and an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance (2016). In the Lone Star Conference, the Lady Buffs have been just as successful with three LSC regular season titles (2014-2016), two LSC Tournament Championships (2014, 2015) and four trips to the LSC Championship game.
 
LSC ACADEMIC TEAM CHAMPIONS
During the 2016-17 campaign, the Lady Buffs tallied a 3.568 grade-point average to lead all 11 LSC women's basketball programs. Sophomore Reagan Haynes won the prestigious Elite 90 Award, which is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the national championship site, as the Lady Buffs earned their third Elite Eight berth in the last four years in 2016-17.  In Mattio's first season at the helm of the Lady Buffs in 2015-16, the squad tallied a 3.53 GPA.
 
LSC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The Lady Buffs picked up 11 of the possible 31 first place votes to sit atop of the poll with 301 points. Defending LSC Champion Eastern New Mexico grabbed seven first place votes (280) to sit second followed by reigning LSC Tournament Champion Tarleton State with 270 points and three first place votes. Angelo State sits fourth with four first place votes (267) followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (six first place, 260), Texas Woman's (172), Cameron (145), Texas A&M-Kingsville (121), Midwestern State (120), UT Permian Basin (63) and Western New Mexico (47).
 
Mackenzie Hailey of Tarleton State was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year. The Burleson, Texas native transferred to Tarleton from UT-Arlington prior to the 2016-17 season, she was tabbed the league's Newcomer of the Year and a Second Team All-LSC selection as a freshman while averaging 16.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest while finishing the season with 13 double-doubles.
 
Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball expanded to 11 basketball-playing institutions prior to 2016-17 Western New Mexico (Silver City, New Mexico) and UT Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) joined the league. Each team will play a double round-robin conference schedule with 20 conference games. For the first time, Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco will host the LSC Basketball Championships on March 1-4.

THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
Entering the week, LSC women's teams were 117-118 overall. The women's squads are currently 19-17 combined against the Heartland, and 10-12 versus RMAC teams, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
 
Offensive Player of the Week - Marquita Daniels (ASU)
Daniels had one of the best weeks of her career with a 28.0 points per game average. The senior led ASU by setting a career high in scoring in back-to-back games in two road victories. She scored 27 points in Lawton against Cameron and bested it with 29 points at Midwestern State. She made 60 percent of her shots including 58.8 percent from the 3-point line. Against Midwestern State, Daniels went 6-for-8 from behind the arc in the win. The Atlanta native also recorded nine steals and 10 assists.
 
Defensive Player of the Week - De'Anira Moore (ASU)
Moore made history against Midwestern State recording the first triple-double in Angelo State history. The sophomore recorded 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks in the victory. The 10 blocks ties an ASU single game record and is the third most in a single game in Division II this season. She was close to a triple-double for the week with 15.5 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per contest and 8.5 blocks. She grabbed 17 defensive rebounds and finished with a double-double against Cameron with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the road win.
 
TEXAS WOMAN'S RECAP
The #25 Lady Buffs took a 22-8 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back as they used a balanced attack to race past the Pioneers of Texas Woman's. 74-38 on Saturday afternoon during Lone Star Conference action.
 
West Texas A&M was led offensively by Tiana Parker as the junior went 7-of-8 from the floor including 1-of-3 from the free throw line to lead all players with 15 points followed by Lexy Hightower with 10, Cece Wooten grabbed eight rebounds on the afternoon to go along with two blocks. WT finished the game going 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field including 7-of-15 (46.7%) from deep and 15-of-20 (75%) from the charity stripe with 46 rebounds (14 offensive, 32 defensive), 16 assists, 15 turnovers, five blocks and eight steals in the win.
