  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team scored three runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-4 win over Adams State at Rawlings Field Saturday in the first of two games Saturday for the Buffs.  WT will face Colorado State-Pueblo at 4 p.m.  Junior Christian Loya went 3 for 5 with two runs scored, while senior Nick Canas went 3 for 3 with three RBI to lead WT against the Grizzlies.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs opened the scoring in the first inning as senior Bodie Bryan tripled to center to begin the game, followed by a sacrifice bunt RBI from junior Blake Weaver for a 1-0 lead.
  • Junior Christian Loya double through the left side and scored on a Canas double to right center for a 2-0 lead.
  • Senior Brandon Marrero led off the top of the second with a solo home run down the right field line for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Buffs left the bases loaded in the second and in the third, before Adams State got on the board in the bottom of the third with a hit batsman, balk and RBI single from Nico Nintze for a 3-1 lead.
  • WT then added to its lead in the fourth as senior Luis Amaro drew a one-out walk, followed by a pitching change and Amaro then advanced to second on a balk.
  • Canas singled to left, plating Amaro for a 4-1 lead.
  • The Buffs loaded the bases once again in the fifth inning courtesy of two miscues by the Grizzlies and again were unable to get anyone home as the team loaded the bases three times through the first five innings, scoring just one run.
  • Adams State cut the deficit to two with a solo home run from Tyson Zanski in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 WT lead.
  • Marrero singled and advanced to second on the fifth Adams State miscue of the game to begin the seventh for the Buffs.
  • Freshman Tommy Williams moved Marrero to third on a sacrifice bunt, followed by a RBI double from junior Justice Nakagawa for a 5-2 lead and he then stole third.
  • Bryan singled through the left side plating Nakagawa for a 6-2 lead.
  • Junior Braden Baker relieved junior starter Joe Corbett before the bottom of the seventh inning as Corbett went six innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, walked one and fanned seven in his first career start for WT.
  • Adams State scored a run in the seventh on a RBI single from Nintze for a 6-3 score.
  • The Buffs responded with a run in the eighth as Loya tripled to center and scored on a Canas sacrifice fly for a 7-3 lead.
  • The Grizzlies used a home run from Zanski in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-4 score and junior Dominic Yearego retired Adams State in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT tallied seven runs on 13 hits with no errors, while Adams State had four runs on nine hits with five miscues leading to just one unearned runs.
  • Loya hit a double and a triple in the game for a 3 for 5 outing and scored twice, while Canas had one double with the Buffs recording seven extra-base hits in the game as Marrero belted a home run and a triple from Bryan.
  • Corbett (1-0) earned the win, while Baker went two innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and fanned three.
  • Six different Buffs had at least two hits in the game.
  • The Grizzlies were led by Zanski who had a pair of home runs in the game going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI.Nintze went 2 for 5 with two RBI, while Dustin Kachel went 3 for 4 with a run scored.
  • Adam Molina (0-1) took the loss for the Grizzlies, going 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, walked four and fanned three.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs will face Colorado State-Pueblo in the nightcap 4 p.m., Saturday, followed by Adams State once more on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT to conclude the weekend series, before returning home to open the 2018 home slate next Friday at 5 p.m. in a three-game series against New Mexico Highlands.
