Box Score

Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Colorado State-Pueblo 12, West Texas A&M 5

  • Records: West Texas A&M 2-1, Colorado State-Pueblo 1-1

  • Location: Pueblo, Colo. (Rawlings Field)

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team pulled within 5-4 of Colorado State-Pueblo in the sixth inning, but seven runs over the final three innings proved to be too much as CSUP evened the season series with WT in a 12-5 decision Saturday.  The Buffs won the first meeting with CSUP yesterday, 9-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Just like yesterday, CSUP jumped out to the early lead as the ThunderWolves plated two runs in the bottom of the second on a leadoff double from Dakota Popham as he later scored on a WT miscue for a 1-0 CSUP lead.
  • The T'Wolves added another on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Buffs evened the game in the top of the third as they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman.Senior Nick Canas continued his impressive start to the season with a two RBI single up the middle for a 2-2 score.
  • CSUP added a run in the third with two out on an infield single and added two more runs on a two run home run from Billy Reyes for a 5-2 score in the fourth.
  • WT answered with two runs in the sixth as the Buffs loaded the bases for the third time in the game with a two RBI single through the left side from senior Bodie Bryan for a 5-4 score. The Buffs then hit into one of four double plays in the game killing the potential rally.
  • From there, CSUP plated three in the bottom of the sixth and four in the bottom of the eighth for the 12-4 lead.
  • The Buffs tallied one run in the top of the ninth on a junior Tag Baxter single up the middle for the final score of 12-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior Darin Cook (0-1) took the loss in five innings for the Buffs, allowing six hits, five runs – four earned, walked one and fanned four.
  • The bullpen really struggled as it pitched the final three innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs with only three earned as two errors proved costly leading to four unearned runs.
  • Canas went 2 for 3 with two RBI as the lone Buff with multiple hits.
  • WT stranded 12 runners in the game and had four double plays turned on it, while turning just one twin killing.
  • The Buffs had five runs on seven hits with two errors, while CSUP had hot bats, recording 12 runs on 14 hits with one error.
  • The T'Wolves were led by Popham who went 3 for 5 with three runs scored and Billy Reyes was 2 for 2 with five RBI.
  • CSUP's Timmy Burtzloff (1-0) earned the win in relief, going 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs – two earned, walked four and fanned one.
