Amaro’s Home Run Highlights 4-3 Victory for Buffs in Opener of Twin Bill

Box Score

THE BASICS:

  • Score: West Texas A&M 4, New Mexico Highlands 3

  • Records: West Texas A&M 3-1, New Mexico Highlands 2-3

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)

  • The Lead: A two run home run from senior Luis Amaro and a walk-off wild pitch in extra-innings propelled the West Texas A&M baseball team to a 4-3 victory over visiting New Mexico Highlands in the 2018 home opener at Wilder Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Cowboys had two infield hits and an error in the top of the second, but senior pitcher Ryan Larison came back with a big strikeout to end the threat stranding three.
  • In the bottom of the second, a hit batsman and a single through the right side put two on, but a double play and a ground out to short ended the threat.
  • WT put two more on, and in scoring positon, in the third, but a called strike three ended the threat.
  • Two quick outs by the Buffs in the top of the fourth, but a two out single prolonged the frame as a slow roller to short turned into an error scoring one run and a double down the left field line by Joseph Cilladi plated two more runs for a 3-0 NMHU lead. All three runs were unearned in the frame.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, senior Luis Amaro gave one a ride, opposite field, but it curved just foul at the last second for a long strike.Amaro then flew out to center to end the inning and left the baes full.
  • Senior Nick Canas doubled off the left field wall with one out and then a RBI single up the middle from junior pinch hitter Henry Hausman for a 3-1 deficit and then an error put runners at the corners.A walk to junior Justice Nakagawa loaded the bases with two away for senior Bodie Bryan who flew out to left as the Buffs left the bases loaded for the second inning in the game.
  • With nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, Amaro wouldn't be denied this time as he crushed the Jacob Padilla offering to right center for a two run home run tying the game at three. The home run chased Padilla from the game in favor of Kyle Bedsole.
  • Canas walked and stole second, followed by a single through the left side from junior Nick Guaragna, for runners at the corners with one out.The Buffs hit into a double play to end the inning, sending the game to extra innings.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Williams beat out an infield chopper and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second, followed by an intentional walk.A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet to second and third.
