  • The Lead: Seven runs over the first three innings and 7.2 innings of no-hit baseball lifted the West Texas A&M Buffs to a 12-3 win over New Mexico Highlands in the nightcap of a doubleheader Friday.    Saturday's single game has been moved from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. to allow for potential cold temperatures to rise.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT jumped out on the Cowboys early, plating three runs in the first inning on a RBI single from senior Jimmy Cubillos and a RBI single down the left field line from junior Henry Hausman and a bases loaded wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Buffs added four runs in the third, highlighted by a two RBI triple from junior Nick Guaragna for a 7-0 lead.
  • A single run in the fourth put the Buffs up 8-0, but NMHU scored three runs on no hits in the fifth as the WT bullpen struggled to get out of the inning.
  • The Buffs used three pitchers in the inning and walked three times as the Cowboys left the bases loaded.Junior Braden Baker got out of the jam for the Buffs with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
  • The Buffs scored four more times in the sixth, highlighted by a three RBI double from junior Tag Baxter and a 12-3 lead.
  • Baker had command of the zone as he cruised into the eighth before Wyatt Bishop broke up the no-hit bid with a single through the left side.
  • The Cowboys tallied the second hit of the game in the ninth.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the game, WT had 12 runs on 13 hits with no errors, while NMHU had three runs on two hits with three errors leading to four unearned runs.
  • Four different Buffs had two hits each as Baxter was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Hausman was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Junior Zach Dixon pitched three innings, walking four and fanning five, while Baker earned his first win as a Buff (1-0) pitching the final 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and fanning eight.
  • WT walked 12 in the game and struck out 15.
