  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team continued its strong pitching as junior Joe Corbett and junior Todd Danzeisen combined for a one-hitter on a cold Saturday afternoon 11-1 win at Wilder Park, sweeping a three game series over visiting New Mexico Highlands.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Due to extremely cold temperatures in Canyon Saturday afternoon, the first four innings was a pitcher's duel as temps were in the 20s throughout the game.
  • Corbett and NMHU starter Kyle Bedsole combined for 11 strikeouts and six from Corbett.
  • NMHU struck first in the top of the fifth as a hit batsman and stolen base put a runner in scoring position.Following a lineout to second, Eloy Rena doubled down the right field line for the lone hit and plated the run for a 1-0 Cowboy lead.
  • WT roared back in the bottom of the frame as it plated four runs beginning with a single from senior Brandon Marrero, followed by a sacrifice bunt from freshman Tommy Williams.Marrero moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a junior Justice Nakagawa ground-rule double for a 1-1 score.
  • Following another wild pitch and Nakagawa advancing to third, senior Bodie Bryan put WT up for good with a RBI single to center as he then stole second and third, followed by a junior Blake Weaver RBI sing through the left side for a 4-1 lead.
  • The Buffs added two more in the sixth – both coming on wild pitches for a 6-1 lead.
  • Corbett continued to shut down the Cowboys and in the bottom of the seventh, Williams came up with a two out, double to left, plating two more runs for an 8-1 lead and he later scored unearned for a 9-1 advantage.
  • Sophomore Darius Carter ended the game with a walk-off two RBI double to left field for a run-rule finish and an 11- score in the bottom of the eighth.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT scored 11 runs on 14 hits with no errors in the game as Weaver went 3 for 5 with a run scored and a RBI, while Marrero went 3 for 3 with three runs scored.
  • Corbett (2-0) went 7.2 innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, walked one and fanned a season-high ten Cowboys.
  • Danzeisen pitched 0.1 innings facing one batter.
  • Bledsole (0-3) took the loss, going 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and fanned six.
  • The Buffs held NMHU to just three combined hits over the final 17.2 innings of the series.
