  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team plated six runs in the fourth inning to blow open a tight game for an 8-1 win over visiting Adams State Friday afternoon in the first of a four game series. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Grizzlies, who had three games cancelled to this point, including one against WT the first week of the season in Pueblo, Colo., drew first blood Friday afternoon as a double from Nico Nintze, followed by a RBI single from Dakota Solis for a 1-0 lead with one away in the inning.
  • WT tied the game in the third as freshman Tommy Williams began the frame with a double to left, followed by a great bunt single from junior Justice Nakagawa and senior Jimmy Cubillos hit a sacrifice fly to left for a 1-1 score.
  • The Buffs plated six runs in the fourth with great small ball play as the team batted around beginning with junior Christian Loya getting plunked with a pitch.
  • Senior Nick Canas extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double down the left field line, plating the go ahead run.Junior Nick Guaragna put down a great sacrifice bunt and Williams came up with a RBI bunt single for the third-straight bunt.Following an out, senior Bodie Bryan put down a bunt up the first base line for a RBI and a single.
  • Later in the inning Cubillos doubled home two and senior Luis Amaro hit a RBI ground-rule double for a 7-1 lead as the Buffs tallied five hits in the frame.
  • WT added a solo run in the fifth as Canas began the inning with a triple to right and scored on a fielding error by the Grizzlies for an 8-1 lead.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs tallied eight runs on nine hits with one error, while Adams State had one run on eight hits with one error.
  • Cubillos went 1 for 3 with one run scored and a team-high three RBI, while Canas was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double, a triple and a RBI.Amaro went 2 for 3 with a RBI, while Williams was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
  • Larison (2-0) went five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, walked one and fanned four.
  • Junior Drew Mesecher pitched the final our innings, allowing five hits and striking out six with no walks to earn the save.
  • Adams State starter David Maldonado (0-1) went 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, six earned runs, walked one and fanned one.
  • The Grizzlies were led by a 3 for 4 day from Tyson Zanski and Solis tallied 2 for 4 outing with the lone RBI.

  • The Buffs and Grizzlies will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. at Wilder Park, followed by a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. to conclude the series.
