THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team battled back from an early 1-0 deficit scoring runs in each of the final five innings for a 9-3 win at Colorado State-Pueblo in the season-opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The ThudnerWolves used a two out, 3-2 count, RBI single by Gilbert Sauceda for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • The Buffs came back in the top of the second with a pair of singles, but two fielder's choice outs and a ground out ended the threat, leaving two stranded.
  • A leadoff error in the top of the fifth put junior Tag Baxter on for the second-straight inning of the leadoff man, reaching base.
  • Following an out, junior Justice Nakagawa belted a two run home run to left field for a 2-1 WT lead for his first long ball of his WT career.
  • Senior Jimmy Cubillos singled to second and senior Bodie Bryan advanced to third with one away and runners at the corners as CSUP went to the bullpen in favor of Ryan Laydon to replace starter Chris Douglas.
  • A hit batsman and a balk scored the third run of the inning for the Buffs as it would be all the Buffs would get in the inning as a double play ended the threat after the second pitching change of the inning by the ThunderWolves.
  • WT continued the scoring in the sixth as senior Nick Canas began the frame with a triple to center field, followed by a RBI single from junior Nick Guaragna for a 4-1 lead.Baxter followed the Guaragna RBI with a RBI double to right center and a 5-1 lead.
  • The Buffs put two on in the seventh and Canas hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 lead.
  • Senior Bodie Bryan doubled to right, plating senior Nelsen Paredes for a 7-1 score in the top of the eighth, marking the fourth-straight inning plating a run.
  • The ThunderWolves got a triple to left center with one away in the bottom of the eighth, marking their first extra-base hit of the game.Chris Devery reached on an error by the Buffs, plating Boyd for a 7-2 score.
  • Sauceda came up with his second RBI single for a 7-3 score with two away.Senior reliever Tate Huebner got a pop out to end the inning.
  • A walk, hit batsman and a ground out put runners at second and third for the Buffs in the ninth as Guaragna came up with a two RBI single up the middle for a 9-3 lead pushing the advantage back to six.
  • Huebner retired the ThunderWolves in order in the ninth for the long save.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT had nine runs on ten hits with one error, while CSUP had three runs on six hits with one error.
  • Guaragna went 2 for 5 with a run scored and three RBI to lead three Buffs with two hits each.
  • Nakagawa went 1 for 2 with a run scored, two RBI, one walk and a home run.
  • As a team, the Buffs had four extra-base hits with doubles from Bryan, Loya and Baxter, while Canas hit a triple.
  • Senior Ryan Larison (1-0) earned the win as he went six innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned six, in 23 batters faced.It was his fifth career win in a WT uniform (5-3).
  • Huebner pitched three innings, allowing three hits, two unearned runs and fanned three for his first career save as a Buff.
  • Sauceda paced CSUP going 2 for 4 with two RBI as five different ThunderWolves had hits in the game.
  • Douglas (0-1) took the loss in 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs – two earned, walked two and fanned six.
  • CSUP used six pitchers in the game.
  • WT improved to 10-0 all-time in season-openers under tenth year head coach Matt Vanderburg and 14-11 all-time since baseball was reinstated at WT in 1994.
  • The Buffs now are 8-11 all-time against CSUP and snapped a three-game winning streak by the ThunderWolves in the series.
  • WT evened the all-time series in Pueblo at 5-5 and Vanderburg won his 278th game at WT (278-191) and his 377th in his 13th season (377-258).
