CANYON, Texas – #8 West Texas A&M opens Lone Star Conference play on Thursday, Nov. 29, when they host Cameron at the First United Bank Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Buffs open LSC play at 8-1 overall after two wins at the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic last weekend. Ryan Quaid broke the program record for career rebounds in their 66-62 win over the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma.
A LOOK BACK AT CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
West Texas A&M led by as much as 15 in the first half in their 66-62 victory over Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in Canyon. Ryan Quaid scored a game-high 22 points, nine of those coming in the first four minutes of the game, as the Buffs improved to 4-0 at home this season.
Quaid reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season and 10th of his career after going an efficient 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds. UCO's Adarius Avery, a transfer from Loyola-Chicago's Final Four team, had a double-double for the Bronchos with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Jordan Collins reached double figures for the Buffs with 12 points after going a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
WT finished the game 25-of-61 (41.0%) from the floor, 6-of-25 (24.0%) from three point range and 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the charity stripe while pulling down 36 rebounds, 11 assists, 11 turnovers, three steals and two blocks.
A LOOK AT CAMERON
Cameron enters the first weekend of Lone Star Conference play averaging 82.2 points per game while shooting 40.3% from the floor, 36.5% from three-point range and 74.0% from the free throw line. Both of their wins this season over schools from the Heartland Conference including a 79-78 win over Dallas Baptist on Nov. 20.
Zach Dumas was named the Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 24.0 points last week. He poured in a season-high 28 points in their upset win over DBU where he went 13-of-14 from the charity stripe. The 6-foot-3 guard likes to attack the basket as he has already attempted 57 free throws this season.
Tyus Momoh and Johann Tate are also averaging in double figures for the Aggies. Momoh is averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 assists per game while Tate is at 11.2 per game while shooting 39.6% from the floor and 90.0% from the charity stripe
Andrew Brown took over as CU's twelfth head men's basketball coach on April 1, 2016 where he has a record of 29-33. During his first season in 2016-17, he led the Aggies to a 16-12 record and a spot in the LSC Tournament Semifinal after defeating WT in the first round. Before arriving at CU, he was the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State where he was named the Great American Conference (GAC) Coach of the Year in 2013.
LAST TIME VS. CAMERON
Gach Gach and David Chavlovich combined for 42 points as West Texas A&M defeated Cameron 103-93 in overtime in Lawton, Okla. on Feb. 2, 2018. Ryan Quaid also had a monster game with 16 points and 12 rebounds while going 10-of-14 from the charity stripe to lift the Buffs to their fifth straight victory.
INSIDE THE SERIES
West Texas A&M leads the all-time series 34-16 and 20-6 in Canyon. The Buffs have won four straight in the series with two of those going into overtime. Thursday's meeting will be just their fourth meeting in the month of November with Cameron winning the last meeting ,90-84, in 2006.
WT owns the longest win streak in the series having won 12 games from 1989 to 1995. Their first meeting came back on December 6, 1979 in Canyon with the Buffs winning 103-88.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
As mentioned above, senior Ryan Quaid made history on Saturday with his 791th career rebound breaking Reggie Ramey's previous program record of 790 set during his career that spanned from 1973-76. After recording just 133 rebounds as a freshman, he pulled down 226 as a sophomore followed by 355 last year and has 77 so far this season.
Quaid not only leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game but the Fort Collins, Colo. native ranks second in the nation in total rebounds. His 77 rebounds, 62 of those coming on the defensive glass, are tied with Northwest Missouri State's Ryan Hawkins while St. Mary's (TX) Dmitri Peterson's 80 are the most of any Division II player this season.
Bombs Away! The Buffs continue to lead the nation in three-point field goal attempts with 285 followed by St. Edward's (279) and Lindenwood (256). They also rank third in makes from beyond the arc with 90 after leading Division II in both categories last season.
Gach Gach has a team-high 69 three-point attempts through nine games this season which ranks him second in the nation behind Fort Valley State's Jaylon McMillan. After a slow start, the Austin, Minn. has heated up making 9-of-27 beyond the arc over the past three games including a season-high four makes against Science & Arts (Okla.) and Colorado State-Pueblo.
A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
In the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Rankings, WT stayed at No. 8 for the second straight week after going 2-0 at the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic. They didn't move in the D2SIDA Top-25 either as they remained at seventh heading into the first two games of LSC play.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT basketball in Saturday's 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100 win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best winning percentage in program history at 74.3%.
BUFFS ADD FIRST TWO PIECES TO 2019-20 RECRUTING CLASS
West Texas A&M inked two players during the early signing with head coach Tom Brown announcing the additions of Jake Gerber and Zach Toussaint to this year's recruiting class.
Gerber, a 6-foot-3 guard from Nazareth will be a four-year letterwinner at Nazareth High School where he has earned all-state honors three times. During his junior, season he led the Swifts to a runner-up finish at the UIL State Tournament while also being named the Amarillo Globe News 1A Player of the Year. Toussaint, a 6-foot guard from Johnsburg, Ill., is an elite scorer as his 1,461 career points in two seasons are 100 points away from breaking the Johnsburg High School scoring record. During his junior season, he averaged 22.8 points per game while shooting 36.0% from three and 82.0% from the charity stripe.
