ST. GEORGE, Utah – The #22 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs plated six runs in the third inning and used a complete game effort in the circle by newcomer
Alexis Alfonso as WT cruised past the ThunderWolves of Colorado State-Pueblo, 10-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah to wrap-up WT's first day of the Dixie State Invitational. WT moves to 2-0 on the season while the Pack fall to 0-1.
The Lady Buffs started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as
Stacey Ramirez and
Shea Ibrahim walked before the reigning All-American Ramirez stole third and scored on a ThunderWolves throwing error to give WT the early 1-0 lead. Pueblo looked to cut into the lead in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back singles off of
Alexis Alfonso before a line drive out to Ramirez at short followed by an unassisted groundout to
Kylee Moore at first as WT took the 1-0 lead into the third inning.
Ramirez and
Brittany Gehle started off the third inning with a walk followed by a
Shea Ibrahim single up the middle to load the bases with no outs,
Lacey Taylor flied out to the wall in right field as Ramirez tagged-up to score followed by an infield popup for the second out. Moore added to her big first day in Maroon & White with a two RBI single thru the left side on a 2-2 count followed by a
Shayne Starkey two RBI triple down the right field line,
Brittany Cruz added to the lead with an RBI single to extend the WT lead to 7-0.
The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning as
Brittany Cruz registered her first collegiate homerun with a two-run shot to right field followed later in the inning by a
Briana Garza RBI single up the middle to give WT the 10-0 lead just three outs away from a win. Pueblo registered a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth inning followed by back-to-back fielders choices for the first two outs of the inning followed by a groundout to
Chelsea Skipper at first to end the game, 10-0.
Alfonso picked up the win (1-0) in the circle in her first career game in a WT uniform as the Tucson native allowed no runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the complete game shutout win.
The Lady Buffs return to action tomorrow at Karl Brooks Field as they start the day at 1:30 p.m. CT with the National Runner-Up #2 Red Storm of Dixie State (0-1) who entered the weekend with a 49-game home winning streak before falling to #13 Humboldt State, 4-1 on Friday afternoon in St. George. The Lady Buffs will wrap-up Saturday action against the Jacks (3-0-1) at 6:30 p.m. CT who topped Dixie State and no-hit Fort Lewis (9-0, 5 Innings) on Friday.
