Top-Ranked Lady Buffs Begin Key Three-Game Road Swing at Texas Woman’s and Cameron

CANYON, Texas  – The top-ranked West Texas A&M women's basketball begins puts a 13-game winning streak on the line as it begins a three-game road trip at Texas Woman's and Cameron this weekend.  The Lady Buffs are 13-0 overall and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.  Texas Woman's is 13-2 (winners of 11-straight) and 3-0 in league play, while Cameron is 8-4 and 2-1 in league play.
 
The Lady Buffs and Texas Woman's will do battle Saturday at 2 p.m. in Denton, Texas.  WT then will have a quick turnaround as it will travel to Lawton, Okla., for a 2 p.m. tip Sunday at Cameron.  The Lady Buffs then will conclude the road swing Jan. 13 at Angelo State.  In all, the Lady Buffs have four of their next five games on the road with a home date on Jan. 16 against Texas A&M-Kingsville and a road game at Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 20.

WT is coming off an 85-68 win over Midwestern State Wednesday completing a three-game home stand.  In the game, the Lady Buffs had three players in double figures led by a game-high 17 point from junior Sasha Watson.  She was 3 of 10 from the field, but went 11 of 13 from the line with five assists and four steals.  Senior Michaela Neuhaus chipped in 16 points on 5 of 8 shooting with two triples and 4 of 5 from the line.  Senior Zantaya Davis added 10 points off the bench, while junior Maddison Wild missed a double-double by one bucket and one rebound. 
 
The Lady Buffs jumped out to 25-9 lead in the first half, but the upset-minded Mustangs wouldn't give up battling back for a 44-29 deficit at halftime.  WT extended the lead to 61-41 at the end of the third quarter, but MSU had another run cutting the deficit under 10 twice, but WT pulled away for the 17-point win.  The Lady Buffs shot 48.3 percent for the game and held MSU to 37.5 percent.  WT was 24 of 35 from the line (.686) and held a 42-31 lead in rebounding.
 
With the win, WT extended its winning streak to 13 games to start the season which is the second-best start in modern era history (1987-88) when the Lady Buffs opened with 33-straight wins. 
 
The Lady Buffs are ranked No. 1 in the latest USA Today Division II Women's Top 25 for the second time in two years and for the second time during the regular season (1987-88) when they won 33-straight games en route to a national championship appearance.   WT was preseason No. 1 prior to the 2014-15 season.
 
For the season, Watson leads the team averaging 10.8 points per game.  She is 45 of 88 from the field (.511) to lead the team.  Watson is 46 of 70 from the line and leads the conference in assists (59) and steals (30).  Neuhaus is second in scoring at 9.7 points per game.  She is 41 of 85 from the field (.482) and is 18 of 48 in triples (.375), while going 26 of 29 from the line (.897).  Wild leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 per game and is fourth in scoring at 8.0 points.  Senior Madison McLain leads the team with 23 triples in 56 attempts (.411).
 
As a team, the Lady Buffs are shooting .457 for the season on 343 of 751.  They are 72 of 210 from beyond the arc (.343) and 199 of 291 from the line (.684).  WT is averaging 42.1 rebounds and allowing 30.8 per game, while scoring 73.6 points per contest and allowing 52.1.  The opposition is shooting .343 against the Lady Buffs and no team has shot over 40 percent from the field against WT this season.
 
The Pioneers enter with a 13-2 record and a league-best 3-0 mark in conference play.  TWU has won 11-straight games dating back to a 74-69 home loss to Colorado State-Pueblo on Nov. 22.  The Lady Buffs and Pioneers have one common, non-conference, regular season opponent in Oklahoma Christian.  TWU won 79-70 over the Eagles at home, while WT won 76-70 at OCU. 
 
In conference play, TWU has wins over Tarleton State and Midwestern Stat at home and on the road at Eastern New Mexico last time out 59-54.  TWU was down 45-37 at the end of three quarters and outscored the Greyhounds 22-9 in the fourth quarter.
 
For the season Erin Maxwell leads the team averaging 12.2 points per game.  She is 82 of 166 (.494) from the field as she almost has doubled the next Pioneer in terms of field goals made.  Maxwell is 19 of 25 from the line (.760) and leads the team in rebounding at 9.1 per game.  Kenesha Saygo is second in scoring at 10.1 points per game.  Saygo is 46 of 116 from the field and lead the team in triples with 14 in 38 attempts (.368). Kara Mitchell is third in scoring at 9.1 points per game and leads the team with34 assists and 26 steals.
 
As a team, the Pioneers are shooting .403 from the field on 362 of 899.  They are 56 of 204 from beyond the arc (.275) and 235 of 342 from the line for a .687 clip.  TWU is averaging 45.7 rebounds per game and scoring 67.7 points per contest.  Conversely, TWU has one of the top defenses in the LSC, holding teams to a .310 shooting clip and .189 from beyond the arc.  Teams, though, are averaging 40.7 rebounds against the Pioneers, but scoring just 56.7 points.
 
Nationally speaking, TWU leads the nation in blocked shots (92) and field goal percentage defense (.310).  The Pioneers are fourth in free throws made and seventh in free throw attempts, while ranking fourth in rebounds (686) and 11th in rebounds per game. 
 
The 56.7 points allowed per game ranks 26th nationally and second in the LSC behind WT.  TWU is first in 3-point field goal defense (.189).  Individually, Maxwell leads the nation in blocks with 52 for 3.47 per game which ranks her third.  She is 34th in field goals made (82) and 15th in rebounds (137), while ranking 69th in rebounding per game (9.1).
 
WT leads the all-time series with TWU 49-5.  The Lady Buffs are 22-3 in Denton and have won the last nine games overall in the series. TWU's last win was in the LSC Tournament on Mar. 2, 2011.  WT is 26-1 all-time in Canyon and the series is tied 1-1 in neutral site meetings.
 
Cameron won 82-73 at Eastern New Mexico on Thursday improving to 2-1 in league play.  WT and CU already have played this season as WT won 69-58 on New Year's Eve in Canyon.    In the game in Canyon, the Lady Buffs won 69-58 behind a double-double of 19 point and 12 rebounds from junior Maddison Wild.  McLain chipped in 14 points off the bench, while junior Alie Decker had 11 points.  CU held WT to just 42.6 percent shooting, but the Lady Buff  "D" stymied Cameron to just 32.2 percent shooting.  WT led by as many as 13 and held leads throughout the game, but the pesky Aggies kept battling back.  Cameron was led by 16 points from Charron Montgomery and 12 from Dayla Threatt.
 
The Aggies are led by Threatt who leads the team averaging 12.7 points per game.  She is 51 of 126 from the field (.406) and is second in triples at 21 of 61, while going 29 of 38 from the line (.763).  Threatt leads the team averaging 6.1 rebounds per game.  Brandi Leal is second in scoring at 10.6 points per game on 44 of 98 from the field (.449).  She is a team-best 38 of 85 from beyond the arc (.447).  Montgomery Is averaging 10.3 points per game on 42 of 103 (.408) from the field and 38 of 55 from the line (.691).  She leads the team with 37 assists and has 11 steals on the year.
 
As a team, the Aggies are shooting .409 from the field on 288 of 705.  They are 111 of 292 from beyond the arc (.380) to lead the league.  CU is 156 of 218 from the line (.716).  The Aggies are averaging 39.2 rebounds per game and scoring 70.2 points.  Conversely, the opposition is shooting .367 against them, .311 from beyond the arc and .651 from the line.  The opponents are averaging 41.4 rebounds per game and 66.0 points per game.
 
WT leads the all-time series 38-3.  The Lady Buffs are 21-1 all-time in Canyon, while going 16-2 in Lawton and 1-0 in neutral site matchup.  The Lady Buffs have won ten-straight in the series.
