CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes will open their 2015-16 season this weekend as they travel to Durango, Colorado to take part in the Fort Lewis Skyhawk Regional Challenge with a pair of in-region matchups set against the host Skyhawks (Friday, 8:30 p.m.) and New Mexico Highlands (Saturday, 9 p.m.). WT is coming off of an impressive exhibition matchup with Texas Tech on Monday night as they fell to the Red Raiders, 91-74.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWNHead coach
Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in WT men's basketball history. The Buffs completed an impressive season under Brown in his rookie campaign in Canyon. While returning just three student-athletes who saw playing time the year prior and picked last in the conference preseason poll, WT finished the season with a 17-12 overall record (12-4 at home) and 7-7 mark in Lone Star Conference play. They made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed and fell in the quarterfinals to eventual tournament champion Texas A&M-Commerce.
2014-15 IN REVIEWIn 2014-15, the Buffs started out the season ranked 159th in the Hero Sports Division II Rankings and improved greatly to finish the season ranked 50th in all of DII Hoops. Senior guard

David Chavlovich was named the Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, he was also named to the LSC All-Conference Second Team for his efforts on the court, averaging 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals. The 2014-15 season was also a banner year in the classroom. The team achieved the highest recorded Team GPA in the history of West Texas A&M Men's Basketball as the team increased their team GPA by more than 38% over the previous season.

LSC PRESEASON MEDIA DAY (OCT. 28)Tarleton State earned top billing according to the 2015-16 Lone Star Conference men's basketball preseason poll announced by the league's offices on October 28th. TSU claimed the top spot with 19 first-place votes and 173 points after winning the LSC Championship last season with a 12-2 league mark. Midwestern State finished second with 151 points including the remaining three first-place votes. Angelo State was third with 120 points, followed by defending tournament champions Texas A&M-Commerce in fourth (109). West Texas A&M was picked fifth with 84 points with Cameron sixth (72), Texas A&M- Kingsville (55), and Eastern New Mexico (28) rounding out the poll.
MSU's Bretson McNeal was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year. The LSC has eight teams set for this season and the league race should be as competitive as ever. The season begins November 13 with LSC teams playing a double round robin league schedule, in which each team plays a home and away contest against each of the other teams to determine the LSC champion. The LSC champion will be the regular season winner determined by league games, while the postseason tournament winner is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the conference's automatic qualification. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament set for March 2-5 in Allen, Texas.
TEXAS TECH EXHIBITION RECAPThe West Texas A&M Buffaloes trailed by just four heading into the locker room for halftime before the Texas Tech Red Raiders used their size and depth to outlast the Buffs, 91-74 in a Monday night exhibition at United Supermarkets Arena in front of 2,584 fans in Lubbock, Texas. The Buffs went 27-72 (37.5%) from the floor including 11-38 (28.9%) from deep and 9-15 (60%) from the free throw line to go along with 30 rebounds (12 offensive, 18 defensive), 29 fouls, 18 assists, 12 turnovers and eight steals on the night.
Joseph Prince led the Buffs in scoring with 20 points followed by
David Chavlovich with 13,
Jordan Evans with 12 and
Eric Golightly Jr. with 10.
FORT LEWISThe Skyhawks enter the regular season coming off of an impressive 77-69 overtime win over Division I Wyoming in an exhibition contest on Nov. 7
th in Laramie. FLC is led by interim first year head coach Bob Pietrack who is in his 12
th season in Durango after serving as the assistant under Bob Hofman for 11 years. The Skyhawks were tabbed sixth in the RMAC Preseason Poll announced on Oct. 14
th while senior guard Cade Kloster and sophomore guard Rasmus Bach were named to the RMAC Preseason Team. The Buffs lead the all-time series against the Skyhawks, 7-1 with the last meetings coming during the 2000-01 season.
NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDSThe Cowboys enter the weekend following a 84-53 loss to Division I Grand Canyon University in exhibition action last Thursday in Phoeniz, Arizona. NMHU was tabbed 10
th in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) preseason poll announced on October 14
th. The Cowboys are led by second year head coach Craig Snow who led NMHU to an overall record of 5-21 last season with a 5-17 mark in the RMAC. The Cowboys return just six players from last years squad including their two leading scorers in Jonathan Mines (19.0 ppg) and Kendrick Nichols (17.0 ppg), both of which were named to the preseason All-RMAC Team. The Buffs lead the all-time series against the Cowboys, 28-2 with WT taking the last three meetings between the two teams.
