CANYON, Texas – After a less than impressive first half the Lady Buffs scored three second half goals in route to a 3-1 victory over LSC rival Eastern New Mexico Friday night at The Pitch. The coaches and fans paid tribute to the three seniors on this year's squad,
Haley Girard,
Emily Krenek and
Marissa Naab, before the match.
"I don't know what happened in the first half but it could have been because of the emotions or that we overlooked them but it wasn't good," head coach
Chad Webb said. "It was nice to come out in the second half and score three goals in fifteen minutes and it looked like we were closing to scoring more. I was proud of the way the girls responded and hopefully we can carry that over to the conference tournament.
Girard scored the first of her two goals in the 47
th minute to tie the match while
Karyn Forbes scored the game winner in the 58
th. The win marked the first time the Lady Buffs have beaten ENMU twice in a season since 2012.
"It felt pretty amazing to finish my career scoring two goals," Girard said. "But it was a bitter sweet moment as my friend and teammate,
Emily Krenek, wasn't able to play due to injury. So it was nice to score a goal for both of us."
The Lady Buffs struggled in the first half as the Greyhounds took the lead just three minutes into the match. Baylee Hampton's shot from 30 yards out caught
Courtney Dippel out of position to give the away team an early advantage. It was the second consecutive match this season where the Greyhounds scored an early goal against WT. The Lady Buffs struggled to find any rhythm in all facets of the match during the first half. They constantly lost possession of the ball in the midfield and struggled to put any pressure on the ENMU defense.
A different WT squad took the field in the second half as Girard tied the match up in the 47
th minute. Girard was able to find enough from her defender on corner kick from Forbes to head the ball home. Forbes nearly put the Lady Buffs ahead in the 57
th minute when she found space just outside the penalty box but was denied by the far post.
She wouldn't have to wait much longer to get her name on the score sheet when WT earned a free kick on the edge of the box in the 58
th minute. Forbes had no problem slotting the ball in the back to give the Lady Buffs their first lead of the match, 2-1. The Lady Buffs kept the pedal to the metal in the 61
st minute when Girard picked up her second of the match.
Alejandra Dockery recovered a loose ball and made a run in the midfield. She made a near perfect pass to find a streaking Girard who went far post.
Khadidra Debesette nearly got into the scoring act but was denied by Karissa Stinson in the 62
nd minute. The Lady Buffs defense clamped down and didn't allow a shot on goal in the last 30 minutes of the match.
The win improves the Lady Buffs to 7-9-1 and 4-5-1 in conference.
TURNING POINTHaley Girard's header in the 47
