CANYON, Texas – The #6 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M rebounded from last night's loss in convincing fashion as they handled the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon during the BritKare Lady Buff Classic in Canyon at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box". The win lifts WT to 2-1 on the season while UCCS falls to 0-3.
The opening set saw the teams come out trading blows before a block on the outside by
Leah Mayer and
Kameryn Hayes block stretched the WT lead to 7-5 to force a Springs timeout, the Mountain Lions battled back to take a slim lead before a string of UCCS attack errors forced a timeout with WT leading 21-18. The power of the WT offense showed after the break as a few big swings including a
Sydney Harlan kill in the middle ended the set with the Lady Buffs winning, 25-19.
The second set started off with the Lady Buffs carrying over the momentum from the second as they jumped out to an early 8-3 lead with a
Lauren Britten service ace forcing a Mountain Lions timeout, the WT defense took control after the break as a block by
Jessica Johnson and
Lauren Bevan followed by Bevan kill forces UCCS to take their second timeout at 13-6. The Mountain Lions cut the WT lead to 18-14 before a pair of
Cori Haley slide plays sparked a WT run to end the set at 25-17.
The Lady Buffs started out the third set strong as their defense took advantage of UCCS miscues to force a Mountain Lion timeout following a Mayer kill on an over pass at 8-3, the Lions fought back with a run of their own to cut the WT lead to 11-8 before a UCCS service error sparked a run to push the WT lead to 15-12 on a Mayer and Hayes block. The teams continued to trade blows before Johnson registered a huge solo block in the middle pushed the WT lead to 23-17,
McKenzie Long stepped to the service line for the final two points as Bevan ended the match at 25-17.
The Lady Buffs were led by Bevan with 14 kills followed by Hayes with six while Harlan had five, Hayes dished out 18 assists on the afternoon to lead the team followed by
Kyli Schulz.
Lauren Britten tallied 14 digs to lead the team while the Lady Buff defense registered 10.0 blocks on the night. WT hit .306 as a team with 36 kills and 10 errors while tallying 31 assists and 38 digs.
The Mountain Lions were led by Kim Catlett with 10 kills followed by Cassidy Bush with nine while Celeste Henderson and Lauren Hahn tallied four each, Henderson dished out 22 assists on the afternoon while Catlett had 15 digs to lead all players. UCCS hit .019 with 29 kills and 27 errors while tallying 26 assists and 36 digs on the afternoon with just two blocks.
The Lady Buffs return to action tonight as they wrap-up the BritKare Lady Buff Classic with a rematch of last year's South Central Regional Semifinal against the Rangers of Regis University with first serve set for 7:30 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon.
