CANYON, Texas – The #6 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M started slow and never recovered on Saturday night as they fell to the Rangers of Regis University in straight sets (20-25, 18-25, 24-26) to conclude the BritKare Lady Buff Classic at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon in front of over 500 fans. The win lifts the Rangers to 3-1 while the Lady Buffs fall to 2-2 on the season.
The opening set started off with the Rangers taking the early 5-2 lead before WT bounced back to tie the match on a diving
Lauren Britten dig turned kill at 5-5, the Rangers registered the next three points before a
Sydney Harlan kill sparked a WT run to give the Lady Buffs the 9-8 lead heading into a Regis timeout. The teams continued to trade blows before the Rangers capitalized on WT attack errors to force a Lady Buff timeout with RU leading 19-16, WT fought back to cut the lead to 21-20 before two straight Regis points forced another Lady Buff timeout at 23-20. The Rangers registered a block followed by a big kill following a long rally to take the opening set, 25-20.
The second set started off with the Ranger defense showing their strength with a pair of blocks to open the frame which sparked a run to force a WT timeout with Regis leading 8-5, Harlan connected on a kill down the line after the break followed by a
Kameryn Hayes service ace and a
Jessica Johnson kill in the deep corner to start a small WT run to tie the match at 13-13. The teams continued to trade blows before a small Regis run pushed their lead to 20-17 to force the final WT timeout of the set, the Rangers ended the set with three service aces on the last four points to take the set 25-18.
The third set started off with the Rangers dominating as they scored the first six points of the frame to force an early Lady Buff timeout at 6-0, WT responded with a run of their own highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Hayes. The teams continued to trade blows throughout the middle of the frame before a huge block by
Marisa Ochoa and
Cori Haley forced a Regis timeout with the score tied at 19-19. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the set before the Rangers took the decision, 26-24.
The Lady Buffs were led by Bevan with 14 kills followed by Hayes with seven and Johnson with six, Hayes dished out a team leading 23 assists on the night while Bevan and Britten tallied 12 digs each. WT hit .230 as a team with 41 kills and 15 errors to go along with 38 assists and 44 digs while their defense registered six blocks on the night.
The Rangers were led by Caitie Breaux with 12 kills followed by Mary Schroeder with 11 and Maggie Stewart with 10, Rebecca Sponcil dished out a match high 43 assists while also tallying 14 digs for the double-double. Regis hit .303 as a team with 50 kills and 14 attack errors to go along with 49 assists and 54 digs while tallying nine blocks on the night.
The Lady Buffs return to action next weekend as they travel to Kingsville, Texas to take part in the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Invite as they are set to take on Adelphi, Fort Lewis, American International the host Javelinas at the Steinke Center.
