STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The #24 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M showed little fatigue from last night's five set thriller in San Angelo as they hit .324 as a team to clinch the program's 19
th Lone Star Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon in a sweep of Tarleton State (25-20, 25-22, 25-20) at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville, Texas. The Lady Buffs move to 27-3 (14-0 LSC) with the win while the TexAnns fall to 20-6 (10-5 LSC) on the season.
The win gives the Lady Buffs their 36
th straight Lone Star Conference victory dating back to the 2012 season and it also runs WT's season win streak to 19 matches, the outright LSC title gives the Lady Buffs the right to host the 2014 LSC Tournament on Nov. 13-15 at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon. The victory moves WT to 42-2 all-time against Tarleton State with the Lady Buff claiming the last six meetings while also moving to 19-1 in Stephenville.
The teams traded points to start the match as they split the first eight of the frame before the TexAnns took a two point lead on a kill and service ace before sending a serve out of bounds followed by a
Kameryn Hayes kill to tie the set at 6-6 before kills by Hayes and
Sydney Harlan forced a TSU timeout with WT leading 8-6. The teams traded point after the break as WT continued to hold a two point advantage as Hayes found
Jessica Johnson on the slide play at 10-8 before TSU responded to tie the set at 13-13 followed by a TSU service ace and Johnson kill at the net to make it 15-13, the TexAnns battled back again to tie the frame at 16-16 on a WT attack error before Hayes found Johnson on the slide play once again followed by a TexAnn ball handling error to force another TSU timeout at 18-16.
Hayes found
Lauren Bevan on the outside for the kill off of the block after the timeout followed by another TSU attack error and a
Cori Haley kill to run WT's lead to 21-16 before a TexAnn kill and big block at the net forced a Lady Buffs timeout at 21-18. TSU committed a setting error after the break followed by a
Lauren Britten service ace to make it 23-18 before TSU answered with a kill,
Lexi Davis connected on the quick set to force set point followed by another TSU kill before
Kyli Schulz found Hayes to end the frame at 25-20.
The teams traded the first six points of the second set before a Davis kill on a quick set from Schulz was followed by a Bevan service ace for the early 5-3 advantage before TSU answered with two points of their own to tie the frame at five before two more TexAnn points forced a WT timeout at 7-5. Tarleton continued their run with two more points after the break before a Hayes tip-shot kill ended the run before a TSU attack error forced a Tarleton timeout at 9-7. The teams traded blows after the break before an errant TSU found it way over the net to Johnson who finished with the kill followed by a Haley kill to tie the match at 10-10, the teams continued to trade points to remain tied at 13 followed by a WT ball handling error before the Lady Buffs took the point right back on a Haley kill from Hayes at 14-14.
Davis and Haley connected on a block followed by another Britten service ace that forced a TexAnns timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 16-14 before TSU responded with two quick points to tie the frame again at 16-16, Davis registered a kill at the net followed by a
McKenzie Long service ace to spark a small WT run highlighted by kills from Davis and Harlan to take the 22-20 lead. Hayes found Bevan on the outside for the cross-court finish at 23-20 before TSU answered with a kill that just found the sideline followed by another Bevan kill to force set point, Tarleton wouldn't go down without a fight as they cut the lead to 24-22 before Davis connected on the quick set to give WT the 25-22 win.
The Lady Buffs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the third set as Bevan registered her 10
th kill of the afternoon before the TexAnns battled back to tie the frame at 4-4 before a TSU service error and a WT block gave the Lady Buffs the 6-4 lead, Tarleton fought back to tie the set at 7-7 before a Johnson kill on an errant over pass was followed by a TSU back-row attacker call to make it 9-7. Johnson connected on another kill on an over pass at 11-8 to force a Tarleton State timeout before TSU responded with great defense to tie the set once again at 15-15 before WT ended a long rally with a Harlan kill off of the block at 16-15 before Johnson had a pair of huge solo blocks in the middle to force another Tarleton timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 18-15.
The Lady Buffs registered another point on a TSU attack error after the timeout before a TexAnn point ended a great rally that forced a WT timeout at 19-16, Hayes found Johnson on the quick set after the break to run the lead to 20-16 followed by the teams trading points before a TexAnn kill off of the block cu the lead to 21-18. The teams traded blows again before a Harlan kill down the line forced match point at 24-20, the WT defense would end the match as Johnson registered her fourth block of the afternoon to take the 25-20 win.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with 14 kills on 30 swings to hit .367 on the afternoon followed by Johnson and Hayes with nine kills each, Hayes tied a match high with 24 assists while Schulz had 14 in the win while Britten led all players with 12 digs on the afternoon. West Texas A&M hit .324 as a team with 48 kills on 105 attempts with 14 attack errors to go along with 41 assists, 51 digs and seven total blocks in the match.
Tarleton State was led by defending Sports Imports/NFCA DII National Player of the Week Haley Roberts with a match high 15 kills followed by teammates Kenya Alexander and Kailtyn White with seven each, Emily Medlin tied a match high with 24 assists while Roberts and Katie Covell led the team with 11 digs each. The TexAnns hit .255 as a team with 40 kills on 106 swings with 13 attack errors to go along with 40 assists, 39 digs and nine total blocks on the afternoon.
The Lady Buffs will wrap-up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday night as they head to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene with first serve set for 7 p.m. at the Sawyer Center. WT will conclude the regular season next weekend as they host Texas Woman's on Friday night (7 p.m.) followed by a Senior Day matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon.
