BETHANY, Oklahoma – The #23 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M wrapped up their 2014 non-conference schedule in style on Tuesday night as they made quick work of the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene (25-11, 25-15 25-19) at the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Oklahoma. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to their 20
th straight victory to move to 28-3 overall while the Crimson Storm fall to 19-10 on the season.
The two teams came out and struggled offensively as just two of the first 10 points of the frame were kills as the teams combined for seven errors with a
Kameryn Hayes kill from
Kyli Schulz was WT's first offensive point of the game to force an early SNU timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 7-3, the teams continued to find their rhythm after the timeout as they traded points as WT ran their lead to 13-7 on a
Sydney Harlan cross-court kill that sparked a WT run highlighted by kills from
Lauren Bevan and
Jessica Johnson to force another Crimson Storm timeout at 17-8. Johnson and
Cori Haley joined for a block after the break to continue the Lady Buff run with a pair of Bevan kills and a
Lexi Davis finish to run the lead to 23-11, another Crimson Strom attack error forced set point followed by a Schulz service ace to end the frame at 25-11.
The Crimson Storm jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set before Hayes found Bevan again to spark a 7-0 Lady Buff run as kills by Davis and Haley forced a Southern Nazarene timeout at 7-3, a block by SNU followed by a pair of service aces ended the WT run and cut the lead to 7-6 as the teams continued to trade points with a Lady Buff ball handling error tying the set at 9-9. The frame remained tied at 10 before Schulz found Johnson in the middle followed by a block from Harlan and Johnson to spark another WT run to force a SNU timeout at 16-10 before two straight Crimson Storm points forced a WT timeout at 16-12, the teams traded points before back-to-back kills by Bevan and Haley ran the lead to 19-14 to start another WT run highlighted by another Schulz service ace and a Hayes solo block to run the score to 23-15. Schulz struck again from the service line to force set point followed by another Bevan kill to run her match total to seven to end the frame at 25-15.
The Crimson Storm registered their 16
th attack error of the match to start the third set as the Lady Buffs used a
Leah Mayer kill two points later to jump out to a 2-1 lead followed by a Bevan solo block before SNU battled back to tie the set at 7-7 before back-to-back kills by Harlan and a Haley finish to make it 10-8. The teams traded points as SNU tied the match at 13-13 heading into a WT timeout followed by kills by Bevan and Davis after the break to spark a Lady Buff run highlighted by another Schulz service ace and a Crimson Storm attack error to force an SNU timeout at 17-14. Schulz found Davis on the quick set after the timeout to continue the run as the Lady Buffs used a Hayes kill to run the lead to 20-15, the teams traded points before a Crimson Storm attack error and a
Marisa Ochoa kill forced match point at 24-18 before an SNU kill was followed by a Crimson Storm attack error to end the match at 25-19.
The Lady Buffs were led by Bevan with nine kills followed by Davis with eight and Harlan with seven while Hayes, the defending LSC Setter of the Week, dished out a match high 23 assists on the night followed by Schulz with 13 while
Lauren Britten had 15 digs on the night. West Texas A&M hit .246 on the night with 39 kills on 118 swings with 10 attack errors to go along with 37 assists, 55 digs and six total blocks in the match.
Southern Nazarene was led by Taylor Jacobs with eight kills followed by Emily Dick with six and Emilee Crawford with five, Kaylee Piatt dished out a team high 22 assists on the night while Abbey Bell led all players with 22 digs on the night. The Crimson Storm hit .034 on the night with 28 kills on 118 attempts with 24 attack errors to go along with 26 assists, 51 digs and just four total blocks on the night.
West Texas A&M will conclude the regular season this weekend as they host Texas Woman's on Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a Senior Day matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon with first serve set for 2 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon.
