CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M dropped the opening set before responding with three straight victories to run their win streak to eight matches with a four set win over the visiting Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22) in front of over 700 fans at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" on Tuesday night. WT improves to 16-3 on the season while the Lady Chaps fall to 10-2.
The Lady Chaps started out strong in the opening set as they used a pair of WT attack errors along with a service ace to jump out to an early 8-5 lead, LCU committed a service error to spark at WT run that tied the set at 11-11. The teams continued to battle as the score remained tied at 16-16 before

Jessica Johnson on the slide play to spark a WT run to force a Lady Chaps timeout at 18-16, LCU responded as they went on a run of their own to take the 21-20 lead and force a WT timeout. LCU stretched their lead to 23-21 before a pair of
Lexi Davis kills tied the match at 23-23, the Lady Chaps would use a receiving error followed by a pair of kills to take the 26-24 win.
The second set started off with the Lady Buffs taking an early 5-2 lead on a
Leah Mayer solo block followed by a Hayes kill, LCU fought back to tie the match at 7-7 before another Lady Buff run highlighted by a
Marisa Ochoa kill and a
McKenzie Long service ace to force a Lady Chaps timeout with WT leading 14-9. WT continued their run after the break as they used a pair of
Lauren Bevan kills and a LCU attack error to force another Lady Chaps timeout at 20-13, LCU responded with a run of their own as they used a pair of WT attack errors to force a Lady Buffs timeout at 21-17. The Lady Chaps fought back to cut the lead to 21-18 before three kills by Johnson in the middle forced set point, LCU registered a pair of kills to make it 24-22 before Mayer ended the set with a kill in the middle from a Hayes pass to take the 25-22 win.
The third set started off with the teams trading blows before an LCU blocking error was followed by a
Sydney Harlan kill from a Bevan pass to give WT the 7-4 lead, a pair of service aces by Long and
Lauren Britten stretched the WT lead to force a Lady Chaps timeout at 15-7, Long continued her run at the service line as WT continued their stretch with a huge Britten dig that led to a Bevan kill followed by another Long service ace to force LCU's second timeout at 18-7. The Lady Chaps wouldn't go down without a fight as they battled back to use a pair of kills to force a WT timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 23-13, LCU continued their run after the timeout as they cut the WT lead to 23-17 before back-to-back kills by Johnson in the middle from Hayes to give the Lady Buffs the 25-17 win.
The fourth set saw the Lady Chaps come out with the momentum as they took advantage of a pair of WT attack errors followed by a service ace to force a Lady Buffs timeout with LCU leading 8-4, the Lady Buffs fought back as they took a pair of long rallies highlighted by a Hayes kill from a great dig by Long in the back row to tie the match at 13-13 before LCU registered four straight points to force a Lady Buff timeout with the 17-13 lead. The Lady Buffs fought back as the used a pair of Davis kills and a Bevan service ace to cut into the lead followed by a block by Hayes and Johnson to force an LCU timeout with the Lady Chaps leading 19-18, WT made a run of their own after the timeout as they used three straight LCU attack errors to take the 22-19 lead and force a Lady Chaps timeout. WT used a pair of Haley kills on the slide play from Hayes before the Lady Chaps tallied two straight points to make it 24-22 before an LCU service error ended the match, 25-22.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with 14 kills followed by Johnson with nine and Hayes with eight, Hayes dished out a team high 31 assists while
Kyli Schulz had 15 on the night while Britten led the team with 22 digs followed by Long with 16 and Schulz with 11 for the double-double. West Texas A&M hit .232 as a team with 56 kills on 164 attempts with 18 attack errors to go along with 50 assists, 68 digs and 11.5 total blocks on the night.
Lubbock Christian was led by Abby White with 12 kills followed by Channing Castleberry and Maddie Johnson with 11 while Amy Edwards and Samantha Matthews had 10 each, Erin Fisher dished out a match high 50 assists on the night while Christa Daniel registered 24 digs to lead all players. The Lady Chaps hit .183 with 59 kills on 169 swings with 28 attack errors to go along with 55 assists, 81 digs and just four blocks on the night.
The Lady Buffs return to action this weekend as they jump back into Lone Star Conference action with a pair of road matches, WT will travel to Lawton, Oklahoma on Friday night to take on the Aggies of Cameron (7 p.m.) followed by a Saturday afternoon Highway 287 Challenge matchup with Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with first serve set for 2 p.m. in Wichita Falls.
