Four Set Road Win Over Cameron Gives the Lady Buffs Their Ninth Straight Victory

LAWTON, Oklahoma – For the second straight match, the Lady Buff of West Texas A&M dropped the opening frame but fought back to take a four set victory as they ran their Lone Star Conference win streak to 30 matches dating back to the 2012 season with a road victory over the Cameron Aggies (18-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-??) on Friday night at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Oklahoma. The Lady Buffs move to 17-3 (8-0 LSC) on the season while the loss drops Cameron to 9-8 (2-6 LSC).
 
The opening set saw the teams trade early blows as they split the opening six points of the frame before the Aggies went on the first run of the match as they used a WT blocking error followed by a kill to force an early Lady Buff timeout with CU leading 10-7, the Aggies continued to hold a small lead after the timeout as the teams traded service errors before a solo block by Lexi Davis and a kill in the middle by the junior sparked a WT run to cut the lead to 15-13 before Cameron went on a 5-2 run to force a WT timeout at 20-15. WT continued to make unforced mistakes after the break as a service error and attack error ran the score to 23-17 before a Lauren Bevan kill from Kameryn Hayes, the Aggies responded with a point of their own to force set point before an Cameron finish ended the set at 25-18.
 
The Lady Buffs came out swinging in the second set as they took an early 4-1 lead as Hayes found Davis on the quick set in the middle followed by a Bevan kill before the Aggies responded with a pair of kills, Kyli Schulz found Hayes on the outside to stop the CU run followed by a Hayes and Davis block to run the WT lead to 9-3. Schulz found Hayes again on the outside to continue the WT run followed by a Hayes service ace and a Cori Haley solo block to run the score to 14-5, CU registered a pair of points followed by a Haley kill on the slide play and a Bevan finish to run the WT lead to 16-8. The teams traded points before another Haley kill and a Cameron attack error forced a CU timeout at 19-10, WT continued their run after the timeout as a Lauren Britten service ace ran the score to 22-10 followed by a Lady Buff block and a Bevan kill to force set point, Hayes found Haley on the right side for the cross-court finish to end the set at 25-10.
 
The third set saw the Aggies come and take the early 4-3 lead before a CU attack error followed by a Hayes kill and a Bevan service ace to give WT the 6-4 advantage, the Aggies responded to take the 9-8 lead before a Jessica Johnson solo block on a battle at the net tied the match once again. The teams traded points before a Sydney Harlan kill sparked a WT run to stretch their lead to 15-12 before CU battled back to tie the match at 17-17 before Schulz found Hayes for her 10th kill of the match for the double-double, Cameron committed an attack error followed by a Haley finish to force an Aggies timeout with WT leading 20-17. The Aggies fought back to cut the lead to two at 22-20 before another Bevan kill ran the lead to 23-20, Cameron would register back-to-back points before Hayes found Davis on the quick-set in the middle to force set point followed by a Cameron setting error to end the frame at 25-22.
 
The fourth set saw the teams trade early blows as WT held the 4-3 lead before four straight Lady Buff points highlighted by a Hayes/Davis block and a Hayes kill to stretch the WT lead to 8-3, the Lady Buffs ran their lead to six at 10-4 before the Aggies fought back with four straight points of their own to make it 10-8 followed by a pair of Johnson kills to make it 12-8. The teams continued to trade blows as Hayes would find Davis in the middle for the 18-12 before the Aggies fought back to cut the lead to 18-17 to force a Lady Buffs timeout, the teams traded errors after the break followed by a Hayes kill from Schulz and a Haley finish to make it 21-18 in favor of WT. Another Aggie attack error followed by a Johnson kill in the middle made it 23-18 before a WT service error gave Cameron life but WT would quickly take back the momentum as Johnson and Haley combined for a block to force match point followed by another stuff by the two to end the match at 25-19.
 
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Hayes with 13 kills and 29 assists for the double-double followed by Bevan with 12 kills and 12 digs as the other senior on the squad registered a double-double as well. Schulz dished out 15 assists on the night while Britten tallied 23 digs followed by Bevan and Aspen Sanders with 12 each. West Texas A&M hit .235 as a team with 47 kills on 136 attempts with 15 attack errors to go along with 46 assists, 61 digs and 13 total blocks on the night.
 
Cameron was led by Kendra Adams with 19 kills on 47 attempts to lead all players followed by Kat Evans with 10 kills on the night, Kayla Hebert led the team with 29 assists in the match while Cristina Viera (19) and Hebert (17) registered double-digit digs for CU. The Aggies hit just .094 as a team with 47 kills on 159 attempts with 32 attack errors to go along with 44 assists, 65 digs and five total blocks on the night.
 
The Lady Buffs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they head to Wichita Falls, Texas for a Highway 287 Challenge showdown with the Mustangs of Midwestern State with first serve set for 2 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs made quick work of Eastern New Mexico on Friday night, registering a sweep over the Zias (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) in Wichita Falls.
