WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M ran their win streak to 10 matches while registering the first point of the 2014 Highway 287 Challenge on Saturday afternoon as they made quick work of Midwestern State (25-17, 25-17, 26-24) at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Lady Buffs move to 18-3 (9-0 LSC) while the Mustangs fall to 6-13 (2-7 LSC) on the season.
The opening frame saw the Mustangs come out swinging as they jumped out to an early 10-7 lead before a
Jessica Johnson kill and
Kameryn Hayes solo block sparked a WT run to tie the frame at 13-13 on an MSU attack error to force a Mustang timeout.
Leah Mayer and
Lauren Bevan registered a block after the break to continue the WT run as they would close out the opening frame on a 12-4 run highlighted by three kills by Johnson and an
Aspen Sanders service ace to take the opening set, 25-17 from the Mustangs.
The set set saw the Lady Buffs come out and use a Hayes kill from
Kyli Schulz followed by four Mustang attack errors to force an early MSU timeout with WT leading 10-4, Schulz found Hayes again on the outside to continue the run as WT ran their lead to nine points at 16-7 on a Johnson kill before the Mustangs responded to cut the lead to 17-13. Schulz found
Lexi Davis for a quick kill in the middle followed by another Hayes finish to spark another run that saw two more kills by senior Cypress native to give the Lady Buffs the 25-17 win.
The third and final set started off just like the second as the Lady Buffs came out swinging as a Schulz service ace followed by a Bevan kill and a Mustang attack error forced an early MSU timeout with WT leading 7-2, MSU battled back to cut the Lady Buff lead to 9-6 heading into a WT timeout The teams continued to trade points as MSU tied the set at 18-18 before a Mustang kill forced another WT timeout at 19-18, the teams battled after the break as the score remained tied at 20-20 before the Mustangs registered three of the next four points for the 23-21 lead before a pair of Bevan kills forced an MSU timeout at 23-23. The teams traded points again before Davis took over the match with a pair of kills to end the frame, 26-24.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Hayes with 12 kills, 22 assists and 11 digs for her third career triple-double followed by Johnson with 11 kills while Bevan and Davis had nine each, Schulz dished out 22 assists of her own to tie the WT high while
Lauren Britten tallied 17 difs followed by Sanders and Hayes with 11 each. West Texas A&M hit .212 as a team with 48 kills on 132 attempts with 20 attack errors to go along with 46 assists, 63 digs and seven total blocks on the afternoon.
Midwestern State was led by Kat Molloy with seven kills followed by Angel Summers with six and Sarah Garfield with five, Sarah Rosinke led all players with 26 assists on the afternoon while Casey Fletcher (16) and Madelyn Johnson (14) tallied double-digit digs for MSU. The Mustangs hit .065 as a team with 29 kills on 124 swings with 21 attack errors to go along with 27 assists, 57 digs and seven total blocks on the afternoon.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Portales, New Mexico to face off with the rival Zias of Eastern New Mexico with first serve set for 7 p.m. Saturday afternoon will see the WT Athletic Department welcome back former Lady Buffs for the 50
th Year Anniversary celebration during the match with Texas A&M-Kingsville with first serve set for 2 p.m. at The Box.
