WT Drops First Two Sets, Completes Comeback Against Pioneers on the Road

DENTON, Texas –
The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M dropped the opening two sets before taking the next three including a 15-10 decision in the fifth as they topped the Pioneers of Texas Woman's (21-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-16, 15-10) on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas. WT remains atop of the LSC standings as they move to 15-3 (7-0 LSC) while the Pioneers fall to 10-7 (5-3 LSC) on the season.
 
The opening set saw the two teams trading blows early as they split the opening 12 points of the frame before TWU went on a 4-0 run with three kills and a Lady Buff attack error to force a WT timeout at 10-6, the Lady Buffs battled back to cut the lead to 10-9 on a block by Jessica Johnson and Kameryn Hayes before TWU ran their lead to 20-15 on three straight Pioneer kills to force another WT timeout. The Lady Buffs wouldn't go down without a fight as they responded after the break with an 5-3 run highlighted by kills from Johnson and Cori Haley to force a TWU timeout at 23-20, a Pioneer attack error cut the lead to 23-21 followed by a pair of TWU kills to give the Pioneers the 25-21 win.
 
The second set saw the Pioneers continue their momentum from the opening frame as they registered four straight kills to take an early 9-4 lead to force a Lady Buff timeout, the Pioneers continued to roll after the timeout as their powerful offense ran to a 15-7 lead before a Hayes kill from Kyli Schulz stopped the TWU run but just for a short time. TWU ran their lead to 20-10 before a Maris Ochoa kill from Hayes sparked a small WT run to cut the lead to 22-17 to force a Pioneers timeout, a WT attack error followed by a Pioneers kill forced set point before TWU finished the frame with a block on a Sydney Harlan attack to take the 25-18 win.
 
The third set saw the Lady Buffs and Pioneers trade the first eight points of the frame before a WT run with a pair of TWU attack errors and a block by Johnson and Lauren Bevan before a McKenzie Long service ace to run the score to 15-6, WT ran their lead to as much as nine at 21-13 on a Hayes kill followed by a Lauren Britten service ace and a TWU kill to run the score to 23-14. Schulz dished to Hayes on the outside as she found an opening to force set point followed by a Pioneer attack error to give the Lady Buffs the 25-13 win.
 
The momentum seemed to swing to the visiting side to start the fourth set as the Lady Buffs used a Johnson service ace to take an early 3-0 lead before TWU responded to tie the set at 4-4, the teams continued to trade blows before kills by Harlan and Johnson stretched the WT lead to 11-7 before the Pioneers cut the lead to as little as three before another run by the Lady Buffs as Cori Haley registered a kill followed by three TWU attack errors to run the lead to 21-13. Bevan registered her 14th and 15th kills of the match to run the lead to 24-14 followed by a pair of TWU kills before Bevan struck again to give WT the 25-16 win.
 
The fifth and deciding set saw the two teams trade the first four points before back-to-back errors by the Pioneers gave WT the 4-2 lead followed by another Bevan kill and a TWU point, the Pioneers committed another attack error at 6-3 followed by a Harlan kill to force a Pioneers timeout with WT leading 7-3. The teams traded points as they switched sides of the court following WT's eighth point before Harlan registered her ninth kill of the match to make it 9-5, Schulz found Hayes on the outside followed by the teams trading kills before another Harlan finish and a TWU ball handling error forced a Pioneer timeout at 13-7. TWU cut the lead to 13-8 on a kill before Hayes found Bevan for the finish to force match point, the Pioneers would register two straight points before Bevan's 19th kill of the afternoon gave WT the 15-10 win.
 
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with 19 kills and 15 digs for the double-double while Hayes registered a triple-double with 11 kills, 36 assists and 10 digs on the afternoon, Harlan tallied 10 kills while Schulz had 18 assists on the afternoon. Britten led the Lady Buffs with 22 digs followed by Bevan with 15 and Schulz with 14 for a double-double. West Texas A&M hit .235 as a team with 59 kills on 179 swings with 19 attack errors to go along with 58 assists, 89 digs and eight total blocks in the match.
 
Texas Woman's was led by Mallory Kuechle with 17 kills and 12 digs followed by Jacqueline Santos with 15 kills, Joey Redwine dished out a match high 43 assists on the afternoon while Morgan Wilson had 23 digs with Redwine registering 21. The Pioneers hit .194 as a team with 60 kills on 186 attempts with 24 attack errors to go along with 54 assists, 81 digs and eight total blocks on the afternoon.
 
The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday night as they return home to host the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian with first serve set for 7 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box".
