BoxscoreCOMMERCE, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M used double-doubles by
Lauren Bevan and
Kameryn Hayes as the seniors led WT to a Lone Star Conference sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce (25-20, 25-13, 25-13) on Friday night at the A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse in Commerce, Texas. The Lady Buffs remain atop of the league standings as they move to 14-3 (6-0 LSC) while the Lions fall to 3-13 (1-6 LSC) on the season.
The opening set saw the Lady Buffs take advantage of three early Lion attack errors to go along with a
Lauren Bevan service ace to take the quick 6-2 lead before the Lions fought back to cut the WT lead to 8-6,
Sydney Harlan found an opening on a pass from
Kameryn Hayes to run the score to 9-6 to force a TAMUC timeout. Bevan registered a pair of kills after the break as she continued her strong senior campaign followed by another Lion attack error to run the score to 13-9 before Commerce made a run of their own to cut the WT lead to 15-13, forcing a Lady Buff timeout. The teams traded points after the break before another Bevan kill ran the score to 19-17 followed by a TAMUC attack error to force a Lions timeout at 20-17,
Kyli Schulz found
Lexi Davis, Bevan and Hayes after the break followed by a pair of Commerce kills to cut the lead to 23-19, another Bevan kill forced set point followed two points later by a Hayes finish to give WT the 25-20 win.
The second set started off with a pair of WT points including a
McKenzie Long service ace before the Lions responded with a pair of solo blocks to tie the match at 4-4, the Lady Buffs answered with a run of their own highlighted by a pair of Bevan service aces and a block by Hayes and Davis to run the lead to 9-4 to force a Commerce timeout. Hayes found Harlan on the outside after the break to continue the WT run as they ran their lead to double-digits at 16-6 with a block by
Cori Haley and
Jessica Johnson, Bevan and Hayes connected on back-to-back kills to run the lead to 21-10 before a Commerce kill forced a WT timeout at 21-11. The teams traded blows after the timeout before a Lion attack error forced set point at 24-13, the Lions found the net again on their next swing to give the Lady Buffs the 25-13 win.
The WT defense started off the third set on a high note as they took an early 5-2 lead on a block by Hayes and Davis before the Lions responded with a service ace to cut the WT lead to 7-6, a Hayes kill from Schulz sparked another Lady Buff run to stretch their lead to 16-12 to force a Commerce timeout. The Lions came out of the break with the momentum as they cut the WT lead to 21-20 after the timeout before back-to-back WT blocks and another Bevan kill forced match point at 24-22, Commerce registered the next kill before Schulz found Hayes on the outside for the finish to give the Lady Buffs the sweep at 25-23.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with 13 kills and 12 digs for the double-double while Hayes registered a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 20 assists to go along with seven digs, Davis had one of her best offensive games of the season with nine kills on 14 attempts to hit .643 on the night. Schulz dished out 17 assists on the night while Long and
Lauren Britten registered eight digs each in the back row. West Texas A&M hit .320 with 41 kills on 100 attempts with just nine errors while registering 39 assists, 46 digs and eight total blocks on the night.
The Lions were led by Amy Davault with a match high 16 kills followed by Taryn Driver and Neka Nelson with six kills each, Courtney Tate led all players with 30 assists in the match while teammate Ashley Mireles had 13 digs. Texas A&M-Commerce hit .138 on the night with 39 kills on 116 swings and 23 attack errors to go along with 35 assists, 43 digs and five total blocks in the match.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Saturday afternoon as they head to Denton, Texas to face-off with the Pioneers of Texas Woman's with first serve set for 2 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena. The Pioneers enter Saturday with an overall record of 10-6 with a 5-2 mark in the Lone Star Conference following a three set win over Eastern New Mexico on Friday night in Denton.
