The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team took exception to being dropped from No. 2 to No. 21 in the NSCAA Rankings and took it out on St. Mary's University Tuesday, blasting the Rattlers, 6-2, at San Antonio, Texas.
The Lady Buffs jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first half, as junior forward Katie Henley found the back of the net in the 16th minute off an assist from sophomore forward Sarit Shenar.
St. Mary's tied it one minute later, but WTAMU then stormed back, as Shenar netted a goal off an assist from sophomore forward Dania Lopez in the 22nd minute and junior forward Whitney Cates shook the net in the 27th minute off an assist from senior midfielder Nicole deJongh.
The Lady Buffs took a 4-1 lead into halftime, as Shenar tallied an unassisted goal in the 41st minute, her second of the game and 12th of the year.
Lopez recorded her first goal of the season in the 52nd minute off an assist from deJongh to put WTAMU ahead, 5-1.
Henley logged her second goal of the game and seventh of the season in the 83rd minute on an assist from junior midfielder Misti Northcutt to open a 6-1 lead, before St. Mary's closed the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute.
Senior netminder Jamie Roach recorded seven saves.
WTAMU outshot St. Mary's, 20-15, and had a 9-4 corner kick advantage.
The Lady Buffs are now 6-1 on the season and return home for a three-game homestand, opening with Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday, Oct. 1 in a doubleheader with the WTAMU men vs. CSU-Pueblo, beginning at Noon at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The Lady Buffs return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 3 to host Regis University at Noon. WTAMU wraps up the homestand on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. against border-rival Eastern New Mexico University.
