The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team opened the Lone Star Conference action Friday against Texas A&M-Commerce with a 2-1 loss, giving the Lady Buffs a 4-1 record and take them to the bottom of the heap in the LSC standings at (0-1).
WTAMU came out in the beginning of the game strong with pressure in the first five minutes keeping Commerce in their defensive end without much offensive penetration.
But in the sixteenth minute of play, the Lions Emily Olivier found a loose ball that was passed across the six yard box from Erin de Wolfe and one timed it past Lady Buff goalkeeper Jamie Roach.
It was eight minutes later, when junior Katie Henley played a ball in behind TAMU-Commerce's defense and onto the foot of sophomore Sarit Shenar whose first touch was blocked by Amber Ramoz but not smothered allowing Shenar to take a second touch and tie the game 1-1. Shenar earnes her ninth goal of the year and 23rd point.
This was the first time this season that the Lady Buffs found themselves tied going into the second half.
In the 74th minute of play, Erin de Wolfe broke out down the left side of play getting in behind WT's defense and advancing a one-on-one with Roach, and giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
With such a heated LSC rivalary, neither team was willing to back down and take a loss, the aggressive play began with the Lions first of three yellow cards being awarded to Head Coach Neil Piper. WTAMU's junior Misti Northcutt was given the Lady Buffs only yellow card. The Lady Buffs led the foul count with 12, while Commerce had 10.
The Lady Buffs still lead the all-time series against the Lions 10-3-1.
