Final Stats
The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team, ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25, continued its hot start to the season with a 4-0 win over NCAA Divison I Drury University Wednesday at Springfield, Mo., as sophomore Sarit Shenar continued her scoring spree to open the season.
Shenar, this week's Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, tallied one goal and added three assists, while senior midfielder Nicole deJongh added two goals and junior forward Katie Henley scored one goal for the Lady Buffs, who have outscored their opponents, 16-1, in the first three matches.
Senior goalie Jamie Roach, this week's LSC Defensive Player of the Week, extended her LSC-career record to 38 shutouts with her second blanking of the season.
WTAMU has won 11 of its last 12 matches dating back to last year and is unbeaten in 15 of the last 16 matches, with the lone loss in that stretch to Metro State in the Regional Finals.
Shenar, the LSC Preseason Player of the Year, tallied her seventh goal and fifth assist on the young season.
Henley put the Lady Buffs ahead, 1-0 on a pass from Shenar and was able to slip the ball past Drury goalkeeper Brittany Kimbro, in the 31st minute.
That would remain the score for the remainder of the first half and part of the second half, until Shenar found deJongh in the 52nd minute to put WTAMU ahead, 2-0. Just over 20 seconds later, Shenar made it 3-0 with a goal from five yards out off a Jamie Roach punt which deJongh brought down and passed to Shenar.
deJongh completed the scoring with her fourth goal of the season and second of the match in the 89th minute.
The shots were even for the match at 13-all, with the Lady Buffs outshoting the Lady Panthers, 10-5, in the first half, but only had three shots in the second half, all goals, while Drury shot eight times in the second half, all turned away by Roach and the defense. Roach made seven saves.
The fouls were very lopsided, with Drury committing 10 fouls to the Lady Buffs being whistled just once.
WTAMU has upset a Division I opponent for the second time in three years, after knocking off Texas Tech in 2002.
The Lady Buffs will make their home-opener on Sept. 18, hosting the University of Incarnate Word in a 1 p.m. match at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
