Final Stats
The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team began its road to defend the Lone Star Conference title Friday, August 27 against Adams State at the New Mexico Highlands Tournament in Las Vegas, New Mexico. They were successful as the Lady Buffs showed no mercy as they stomped the Grizzles, 8-0.
WTAMU's senior center midfielder Aubrie Hunter struck gold first as she received a pass from sophomore forward and pre-season LSC Player of the Year, Sarit Shenar in the fifth minute of the game to take the team up 1-0.
Not more than five minutes later, Shenar found the ball off a bounced corner kick from junior defender Misti Northcutt placing it nicely into the back of the net.
The show didn't stop here. Shenar would help on three more Lady Buff plays giving her eight points to end the game (three goals and two assists).
Also helping to prove to the competition that they are not to be taken lightly, were senior midfielder Nicole deJongh who scored a pair of goals, the Lady Buffs third goal of the game in the 30th minute of the first half and the fifth goal from Hunter in the second.
Rounding out the scoring for WT was junior Katie Henley who also racked a pair of goals and had an assist on Sarit's last goal.
Newcomer and senior midfielder Aubre Mjolhus and sophomore forward Dania Lopez provided the assists on Henley's goals.
With the weather being a little hotter than what the Lady Buffs had been used to during training camp, there was no shaking the very focused team. The Grizzles only attack was three shots on senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach and four corners. The Lady Buffs countered with six corners and a dozen shots on net.
The Lady Buffs return to attack Sunday August, 29 at 3:00 p.m. against host New Mexico Highlands in their second regional match of the season.
