EL PASO, Texas - The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team was blanked by the University of Texas-El Paso, 2-0, in an exhibition match Saturday afternoon at UTEP's University Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Miners broke through the WTAMU defense to find the net in the 53rd minute.
The Lady Buffs had their best scoring chance of the afternoon in the 62nd minute, as senior midfeilder Nicole deJongh had two shots within the 10-yard box, but was denied by UTEP goalie Brittany Popoff.
The Miners capped the scoring with a goal off a header in the 79th minute to go ahead, 2-0.
UTEP outshot WTAMU, 20-11, and had seven cornerkicks to WTAMU's four.
Lady Buff netminder Jamie Roach recorded seven saves in the match.
WTAMU, the defending LSC Tournament Champions and Midwest Regional runner-up, opens its regular-season by traveling to Las Vegas, N.M., next weekend to compete in the New Mexico Highlands University Tournament. The Lady Buffs open on Friday, Aug. 27 against Adams State University at 4 p.m. Mountain Time. WTAMU returns to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 29 to take on host New Mexico Highlands in a 2 p.m. contest.
The Lady Buffs' home opener is Sept. 18 against regional-foe University of Incarnate Word.
