Lady Buffs Lose To TAMU-Commerce In Double OT, 2-1, In LSC Title Match Sunday

Nov. 7, 2004

Box Score

The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team lost to Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2-1 in double overtime, in the Lone Star Conference Championship match at Commmerce, Texas.

Sunday's match was a rematch of last year's LSC title match, which WTAMU won 1-0. It was also the fourth-straight year and seven out of the nine years of the LSC Tournament that the Lady Buffs were in the title match. WTAMU is now 11-6-1 in the LSC Tournament.

The Lady Buffs are now 13-5-1 on the year, and will await Monday's announcement of the NCAA-II Midwest Regional selection to see if they are among the four-team field. WTAMU was ranked fifth in the Nov. 3 rankings, behind the University of Central Oklahoma at No. 3, who WTAMU defeated in the semifinals, and TAMU-Commerce at No. 4.

WTAMU's defense faced a whopping 32 shots, including 15 shots on goal, as senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach made a season-high 13 saves. The Lady Buffs had 13 shots, including seven on goal.

Junior forward Katie Henley netted WTAMU's goal at the 41:41 mark of the first half, taking a pass from sophmore forward Sarit Shenar and heading the ball into the net from 10 yards out to give WTAMU a 1-0 lead at the half.

Senior GK Jamie Roach made a season-high 13 saves in WTAMU's 2-1 double OT loss to TAMU-Commerce in the LSC Championship match Sunday. Roach was one of three Lady Buffs named to the LSC All-Tournament Team.

That lead would hold up until the 79:39 mark as TAMU-C's Melissa Arnold had a header off a corner by Erin deWolfe to knot the score at 1-all.

The score would remain tied through regulation and the first extra session, but the Lions' Tamar Geels netted the game-winner at the 101:24 point of the match.

It was the second time this season that the Lady Buffs had lost to the Lions, both by 2-1 scores, as TAMU-C dealt WTAMU its first loss of the season back on Sept. 24. The Lady Buffs now lead the all-time series, 10-4-1.

Shenar, Roach and senior defender Ashley Mosley were all named to the LSC All-Tournament Team.

The LSC is expected to announce its postseason awards later in the week.

The NCAA-II Regionals begin Thursday, Nov. 12, hosted by the top seed. Metro State College was ranked No. 1 in the Nov. 3 rankings and would host the regionals at Denver, Colo.
