Final Stats
The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team beat No. 23 University of Central Oklahoma 1-0, in the LSC semifinals at Commerce, Texas Friday moving to 13-4-1. Senior midfielder Aubrie Hunter netted the game winner in the 69th minute on a pass from junior forward Whitney Cates as senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach earned her second-straight shutout of the LSC Tournament.
WTAMU will face top-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce in the title tilt on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. TAMU-C knocked off Midwestern State, 1-0, in the other semifinal Friday. The Lady Buffs lost to the Lions, 2-1, back on Sept. 24 in their only meeting this season, but defeated the Lions twice last year in the postseason, first for the LSC Championship and then again in the NCAA-II Regionals.
The match has major implications on the regional rankings, as WTAMU is currently No. 5, while UCO is No. 3 and TAMU-C is No. 4. The top four teams advance to the NCAA-II Midwest Regionals next weekend at the top seed.
The Lady Buffs headed into this semifinal game with a 12-4-1 record, coming off a 3-0 wiping of Angelo State Thursday, and a 6-2-1 all-time record against the Bronchos.
This was the fourth time that WTAMU and UCO have hooked up in the LSC Tournament and the second-consecutive season that they have met in the semifinals. Both times WTAMU was the lower seed and upset the higher-seeded UCO.
Despite the Bronchos' shot advantage over the Lady Buffs, 7-5, along with WT only earning one corner kick to UCO's three, Hunter found the back of the net as a result of a pass from Cates off .
This was Hunter's fourth goal of the year and her second biggest game winner of her career as she scored against Texas Tech University in 2002. Her last goal came against Northeastern State on October 24.
Cates recorded her first assist of the year.
WTAMU out-fouled Central Oklahoma 18-9 but there were no yellow or red cards issued.
Roach recorded her second-straight shutout and now has 7.5 blankings on the year and extended her career LSC record to 41.5 shutouts, and now has a goals against average of 0.65.
