The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team used a hat trick from sophommore forward Sarit Shenar and a shutout by senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach to defeat Angelo State University, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Commerce, Texas.
Fouth-seeded WTAMU, which now has a five-match unbeaten streak, improves to 12-4-1 on the year and will face top seed and No. 23-ranked University of Central Oklahoma in the semifinals on Friday at Noon.
The Lady Buffs faced off with the Bronchos just last week, playing to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 28 at Edmond, Okla.
For WTAMU, it avenges a disappointing, 1-0, double OT loss to ASU back on Oct. 15. The Rambelles end their season with a 10-7-3 record.
Shenar netted her first two goals of the match on penalty kicks, as ASU took the physical approach to trying to stop the sophomore striker sensation, accumulating 16 fouls in the match, earning seven yellow cards and one red card.
The first PK was at the 42:12 mark to give WTAMU a 1-0 lead, which the Lady Buffs took into halftime, after outshooting the Rambelles, 7-5 in the opening half.
Shenar netted the second PK at the 86:25 mark and then capped her hat trick taking a feed from junior midfielder Misti Northcutt at 88:08 of the match.
It was Shenar's second hat trick in a row and her fourth of the season, as she now adds on to her school record of 24 goals. She also has surpassed her own school record she set last year for total points, as she now has 57 points, with nine assists.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach made five saves in recording the shutout, her third in the last five matches, as the netminder now has six and a half on the season and an LSC career record of 40.5 blankings.
Friday's showdown with UCO marks the fourth-straight year the Lady Buffs and Bronchos have hooked up in the LSC Tournament. Last year WTAMU blanked UCO, 2-0 also in the semifinals, as the Lady Buffs went on to win the LSC title for the third-consecutive season.
