The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team was led by a hat trick by sophomore forward Sarit Shenar to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma State University, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Weatherford, Okla. in the regular season finale and the Lady Buffs' final tune up for the Lone Star Conference Tournament. Shenar tied her own school record for single-season goals and surpassed her school record for points.
WTAMU ended the regular season with a four-match unbeaten streak and improves to 11-4-1 overall and finishes at 5-3-1 in LSC play, and will be the No. 4 seed in the LSC Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 4 at Commerce, Texas. The Lady Buffs will open the tournament against fifth-seeded Angelo State University on Thursday at Noon.
SWOSU finishes the season at 5-9-4 overall and 1-6-2 in LSC action.
Senior midfielder Nicole deJongh assisted on two of the goals, while junior midfielder Katie Henley got the helper on the third.
Shenar opened the scoring in the 39th minute off an assist from deJongh. WTAMU took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting SWOSU, 10-4, in the first half.
In the 48th minute, deJongh again fed Shenar, who put the ball into the net for a 2-0 WTAMU lead. Shenar completed the hat trick in the 63rd minute, taking a pass from Henley and netting her 21st goal of the season, tying the school record she set last season.
It was Shenar's third hat trick of the season and ties her single-season school record for goals and surpasses her school record for total points, as she now has 51 on the season, passing last year's 47. Shenar extends her career goal record to 42 and career points record to 98.
Shenar entered the weekend leading the LSC in both goal and total points is also ranked fourth in NCAA-II for points per game (3.75) and goals per game (1.5).
SWOSU got on the board in the 87th minute, one of the Bulldogs' three shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach made two saves, as the WTAMU defense limited SWOSU to just 10 shots in the match.
The Lady Buffs faced Angelo State on Oct. 15, losing 1-0 in double OT.
If WTAMU wins, they'll advance to face No. 1 seed, Central Oklahoma on Friday at Noon in the semifinals.
