The 21st-ranked West Texas A&M University women's soccer team began the Homecoming weekend with a bang, beating the Thunderwolves of Colorado State-Pueblo 4-0, continuing the offensive attack with 10 goals this week, improving their record to 7-1 on the year.
With sophomore forward Dania Lopez filling in for the absence of scoring sensation Sarit Shenar, who is playing for the Israeli National Team, the Lady Buffs proved that they are still a force to be reckoned with. Early in the first 10 minutes of play, Lopez found the rebound of a miss kick from senior Aubre Mjolhus at 7:07 tucking it pass CSU-Pueblo's keeper for a 1-0 lead. It was Lopez's second goal of the season and the first of her three in the match, earning her first career hat trick.
The Lady Buffs continued with relentlessness to pursuit of another goal, which came in the 21st minute of play off a 20-yard free kick from junior defender Misti Northcutt, her first goal of the season.
As the teams left for the locker room at half time, the Lady Buffs went to regroup outplaying the Thunderwolves by a two goal difference and every stats category.
As WTAMU stepped back out onto the field, the team did not waste anytime as Lopez found the back of the net for a second time off a junior forward Whitney Cates chip in behind the defense, for a one-time shot at 55:24 of the second half.
With the Lady Buffs outshooting the Thunderwolves 30-6, it was a matter of time before WTAMU would strike again.
Lopez would finalize the game with her third goal of the game and fourth on the year off a pass through the defense by sophomore Annette McDuffee in the 79th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Roach did not face much on the offensive attack from Colorado State-Pueblo as there were only one save she had to make. Roach left the game with 11:29 left in the second half as freshman Sarah Anderson came into replace her. Both keepers record half a shutout for the win, giving Roach four total blankings this season.
The Lady Buffs have a day's rest before they return to action on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium at Noon against Regis University.
WTAMU and the Rangers have never met but are both strong regional teams, as Regis had won seven in a row entering Friday's match at the University of Central Oklahoma.
