CANYON, Texas – The #6 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M hit the road for Lone Star Conference action this weekend as they make the long trip to South Texas to take on the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Friday followed by a Sunday doubleheader in Laredo against Texas A&M International.
 
THIS IS LADY BUFF SOFTBALL
West Texas A&M Softball is in their 21st season of NCAA competition as the Lady Buffs are a staggering 819-331 (.712) since reviving the program prior to the 2006 campaign. WT has won three South Central Regional Championships (2014, 2016, 2021) along with a pair of NCAA Division II National Championships (2014, 2021).
 
2025 REWIND
The Lady Buffs capped off 2025 with a 56-8 overall record and 40-4 Lone Star Conference record. WT opened the campaign ranked 13th before quickly entering the top 10 of the NFCA poll. The Lady Buffs spent 10 weeks in the top five including three weeks at No. 1. WT earned a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title for the second consecutive season.
 
WT HEAD COACH MICHAEL MOOK
In just six seasons, Michael Mook has led West Texas A&M to a 278-67 (.806) mark while claiming the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship. Mook is a two-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year (2024, 2025) who has led the Lady Buffs to four NCAA Postseason appearances (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025). Mook recently agreed to a three-year contract extension to keep him the WT dugout until atleast the Summer of 2028. A new era of Lady Buff softball began on June 20, 2019, as Mook was hired as the third head coach in program history. Mook went 154-61 during his four-year tenure at Valley City State University including an impressive 54-5 in 2019 leading the Vikings to their third-ever appearance at the NAIA World Series.
 
SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
Texas A&M-Kingsville enters the weekend with an overall record of 28-14 with a 23-9 mark in league action to sit fifth in the standings with two weekends remaining. The Javelinas are 12-4 at Hubert Field so far this season.
 
The Javelinas are hitting .319 as a team this season, scoring 297 runs on 383 hits with 74 doubles, 10 triples and 37 homeruns for 265 RBI and a slugging percentage of .490. Dakota Martinez led the way at the plate as the junior from Brownsville is hitting .362 with seven doubles, two triples and nine homers to drive in a team-best 40 RBI.
 
Andrea Martinez has served as the ace for the Javelinas, going 12-6 with a 3.58 ERA as the senior righty from Mathis, Texas has allowed 77 runs (70 earned) on 152 hits with 51 walks and 108 strikeouts in her 137.0 innings of work for an opposing batting average of .280. The Javelinas have a 4.47 staff ERA, allowing 224 runs (184 earned) on 374 hits with 150 walks and 186 strikeouts in 288.0 frames with opposing batters hitting .316.
 
TAMUK HEAD COACH ORLANDO SALINAS
Orlando Salinas is in his third full season guiding the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball program, taking over the reigns in February of 2023. The Kingsville native played baseball for the Javelinas from 1995-98.
 
THE SERIES
Friday marks the 64th and 65th all-time meeting on the diamond between the Lady Buffs and Javelinas. WT holds the 43-20 advantage in the series that dates back to 2006. The Lady Buffs are 21-6 all-time in South Texas as they have won their last four games at Hubert Field. Last season saw the Lady Buffs claim a pair of victories in Kingsville.
 
SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
Texas A&M International holds an overall record of 12-33 with an 8-24 mark in Lone Star Conference action. The Dustdevils are 1-15 so far this season in Laredo with the lone home win coming against UT Permian Basin (9-1) back on March 29th.
 
Victoria Espinoza leads the way offensively for the Dustdevils as the senior outfielder is hitting .266 with eight doubles and eight homers to drive in a team-leading 25 RBI for a slugging percentage of .516. TAMIU is hitting .230 as a team this season, scoring 138 runs on 264 hits with 33 doubles, one triple and 24 homers for 116 RBI and a slugging percentage oif .323 to go along with 126 walks and 249 strikeouts for an on-base clip of .313.
 
TAMIU holds a staff ERA of 5.02 as they have allowed 248 runs (210 earned) on 394 hits with 160 walks and 122 strikeouts in 293.0 innings of work for an opposing batting average of .320. Kylie Goad has made 22 appearances with 21 starts in the circle, going 6-15 with a 5.32 ERA and 12 complete games. The junior has allowed 106 runs (93 earned) on 168 hits with 44 walks and 72 strikeouts in her 122.1 innings of work.
 
TAMIU HEAD COACH SCOTT LIBBY
Scott Libby is now in his 18th season leading the Texas A&M International softball program, holding an overall record of 375-566 during his time in Laredo. The Covina, California native led the Dustdevils to Heartland Conference Co-Championship in 2011 along with a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
THE SERIES
Sunday afternoon will see the Lady Buffs and Dustdevils battle for the 29th and 30th time in a series that dates back to 2009. The Lady Buffs hold the 24-4 advantage in the series, winning 12 straight contests. WT is 6-3 at Dustdevil Softball Field with their last trip coming in 2025, outscoring TAMIU 12-0 in the doubleheader sweep.
