CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M women's soccer continues Lone Star Conference play on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's to The Pitch with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m. in Canyon.
 
TEXAS WOMAN'S RECAP
The Lady Buffs dropped their first contest of the season on Thursday night during the Lone Star Conference opener in Denton, Texas. Alicia Cohen put WT on the scoreboard in the 9^th minute before the #25 Pioneers responded with a pair of goals in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory.
 
A LOOK AT THE HILLTOPPERS
St. Edward's enters the weekend with an overall record of 1-4 as they have dropped their last two matches. SEU opened up LSC play at home on Wednesday night, falling to the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian 2-0. Saturday afternoon will mark the second road contest of the season for St. Edward's as they fell at Colorado Mesa (4-0) in the season opener.
 
Annie Roche leads the way offensively for the Hilltoppers as the sophomore forward has scored a team-best three goals on seven shots during 268 minutes of action, five of her shots have come on goal as the Austin native has registered seven points, dishing out an assist against UCCS.
 
SEU HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
The Hilltoppers are guided by Heartland Conference Hall of Famer Nick Cowell. Cowell has 35 years of collegiate coaching experience; he is in his 20^th season at the helm of the Hilltoppers. He is the winningest head coach in SEU soccer history with 250 victories, leading the Hilltoppers to double-digit victories 14 times.
 
THE SERIES
Saturday afternoon is the 16^th all-time meeting between West Texas A&M and St. Edward's. The Lady Buffs are 8-4-3 in the series that dates back to 2000. The Hilltoppers have taken the last two meetings between the two teams including a 3-1 victory in Austin last season. SEU is 1-5 all-time in Canyon.
 
WT HEAD COACH TURK OZTURK
Bulut "Turk" Ozturk was named the third head coach in the history of the Lady Buff Soccer program on December 19, 2024. Ozturk brings an impressive nine-season track record of collegiate coaching experience to WT.
 
Ozturk was most recently on the coaching staff at Iowa State University for the 2024 season as the Soccer Development Coordinator. In this role, he was involved in all aspects of assisting a power four program that competes in the Big XII conference. Some of coach Turk's major duties included: Game Day coaching, video analysis for team members, scouting reports, recruiting, travel coordination and leading training sessions for the team.
 
Before Iowa State, Ozturk served as the Head Coach at Michigan Tech University for four seasons. During his tenure, he led the Huskies to their first NCAA tournament appearance in nearly a decade in 2023. Under his guidance, Michigan Tech achieved remarkable success with 17 players earning GLIAC All-Conference Awards, one All-American, over 60 players named to the All-Academic Excellence Team, and eight to the All-Academic Team.
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The Lady Buffs were selected 10th in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll announced on August 27th. 
 
Dallas Baptist claimed 29 of the possible 45 first place votes for a total of 650 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Angelo State (13 first place, 634), Texas Woman's (one first place, 556), Midwestern State (511), St. Mary's (468), St. Edward's (435), Lubbock Christian (392), Oklahoma Christian (358), UT Tyler (347), West Texas A&M (284), Texas A&M International (one first place, 244), UT Dallas (168), UT Permian Basin (146), Eastern New Mexico (124) and Sul Ross State (one first place, 83).
 
Annie Rocha of St. Edward's was tabbed the league's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. DBU senior Parker Coe was named the Defensive Player of the Year while Amanda Farris of TWU claimed Goalkeeper of the Year accolades.
