Buffalo Basketball Welcomes Amarillo Standout Zachary Brown

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M men's basketball head coach Tom Brown has announced the addition of Amarillo High School standout Zachary Brown for the 2025-26 campaign.

"I'm extremely fortunate to welcome my son, Zachary Brown to our squad. It has been a lot of fun watching him play the last few years at Amarillo High School. He excelled and played his role for Coach Pillion and the Sandies" said Brown "Zachary sees plays developing two or three steps ahead and has a very good understanding for the game. He does a great job of making others around him better. He can also play defense and is willing to do it. Offensively he moves the ball, shoots at a high clip and can finish around the bucket. We are getting an outstanding player and person in Zach Brown."

Brown has been a three-year starter at Amarillo High School under head coach Jason Pillion, the Sandies have gone 98-16 during that time with Zach becoming the winningest varsity starter in AHS history. Brown graduated as the second leading scorer in AHS history with 1,396 points.

"The LSC has older players and some that have had time to really develop. Just like all of our freshman, Zach will have to get bigger, faster and stronger to compete. Zach will bring a calming presence to our team, even as a freshman. We are expecting him to fit in right away and know our system. Just like his brother TJ (who redshirted last year), both boys have grown up watching WT hoops and understand our team and the expectations" added Brown "The past 10 years at WT we have had some very special teams. If we can develop our incoming group of young men and keep them together, I feel we could have a few more really special teams brewing."

Zach was named to the Texas High School Super Elite Team as well as a recipient of the Texas Panhandle Sports Network Basketball Excellence Award. Brown was named the District Newcomer of the Year, District Most Valuable Player as well as a TABC All-State selection. Zach also excelled in the classroom as a member of the Academic All-District squad.

"Zach Brown is one of the best players to play at Amarillo High. His abilities to see the game is unmatched. He is a great shooter, passer and defender" said AHS head coach Jason Pillion "He was a 3-year starter whose teams won 98 games. He leaves Amarillo High as the second leading scorer in school history with 1,396 points. WT is getting a great player, an unselfish teammate, a winner who is going to do great things there."

Last season, WT made the NCAA National Tournament for a ninth-consecutive season where three freshmen made the LSC All-Freshman team. The Buffs also posted a 3.48 GPA in the classroom, tops in the Lone Star Conference for a second consecutive year. WT will open the 2025-26 season at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic, Oct. 31st at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo. against Missouri Western State and conclude the tournament on Nov. 1st at 5 p.m. against Pittsburg State.
