Men's Basketball Adds JP Shiers for 2025-26 Season

CANYON, Texas – On Monday morning, West Texas A&M men's basketball coach Tom Brown announced the signing of JP Shiers. Shiers comes to Canyon from Cal State Monterey Bay after starting his career at Colorado Mesa.

While at Colorado Mesa, Shiers redshirted his first year in Grand Junction before appearing in six games where he recorded three rebounds, one assist, and one block. Most recently, Shiers appeared in two games for Cal State Monterey Bay, totaling four minutes.

"JP played last season at California State University, Monterey Bay for Head Coach Isaac Williams. The team posted a 6-21 record overall. However, JP didn't get to play and excel as he was sidelined most of the season with an injury and saw very limited action," said Brown. "Before Monterey Bay, JP played two seasons for Head Coach Mike DeGeorge at Colorado Mesa University.  He redshirted in his first season at Mesa and then only played sparingly for a very solid Colorado Mesa team.  JP's freshman season in 23-24 ended in Canyon, Texas in the NCAA DII Sweet 16 game, as the WT Buffs beat Colorado Mesa 88-76 for the second time that year."

"JP needs to get game time action, and he will have that opportunity here at WT as we love size.  We always need someone to rebound the basketball, and I know JP can do that," added Brown. "JP is a legit seven-footer and is very mobile for his size.  We are really anxious to get JP to Canyon to start working with him.  On his visit you could just tell how great of a kid JP is and how he will impact our program in multiple ways.  We are excited to add JP Shier to our squad!!"

Last season, WT made the NCAA National Tournament for a ninth-consecutive season where three freshmen made the LSC All-Freshman team. The Buffs also posted a 3.48 GPA in the classroom. WT will open the 2025-26 season at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic, Oct. 31st at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo. against Missouri Western State and conclude the tournament on Nov. 1st at 5 p.m. against Pittsburg State.
