CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team adds another chapter to its longstanding rivalry with Midwestern State on Wednesday. The Buffs (2-3-1) and Mustangs (3-0-2) are set to square off at 7 p.m. at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.

No one is a more familiar opponent to West Texas A&M than Midwestern State as Wednesday's matchup marks the 62
nd time the two programs have played each other. The Mustangs lead the all-time series with the Buffs 33-23-5 in a series that dates back to 1991. Midwestern State has won the last three contests including victories of 1-0 and 4-2 last season. The Buffs are 1-3-1 in the last five meetings and 5-4-1 in the last 10.

The Mustangs enter Wednesday's match with a 3-0-2 overall record and come off a pair of wins against then-No. 14 Fort Hays State and No. 17 Southern Nazarene. Reigning D2CCA National Player of the Year Mere Escobar leads the Midwestern State offense with 14 points on six goals, including four in the past two games, and two assists. Liam Pritchard leads the team with four assists while Eduardo Cerna and Samuele Muroni each have two goals. In goal, Daniel Robles and Jakob Stone have split time with Stone earning the nod in the last two games. As a unit, the two goalkeepers have combined for seven goals allowed and six saves on 40 shots faced for a 1.56 goals against average, a .462 save percentage, and a shutout.

Despite going into halftime scoreless, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team used four second-half goals to defeat Hawaii Pacific 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Butch Lauffer is in his 34th season as head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University. As the longest tenured head coach in WT history, Lauffer has coached the men to 31 consecutive non-losing seasons and the women to 12-plus victories in 12 seasons. Lauffer has recorded a 378-174-55 (.668) record at the helm of the Buffs with a 568-241-71 (.686) overall record at WT.

LSC PRESEASON POLL
Reigning Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament champion Midwestern State received all but one of the 33 possible first-place votes for a total of 362 points. WT finished second in the voting with a total of 303 points followed by St. Mary's with 275 points and a first-place vote. Dallas Baptist (266) and Texas A&M International (211) round out the top five with Lubbock Christian (179), Oklahoma Christian (174), Eastern New Mexico (136), and UT Tyler (124) following. St. Edward's (113) and Sul Ross State (35) finish out the poll.

Midwestern State's Mere Escobar and Juan Galindo were tabbed the LSC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while St. Mary's Johnny Thurbin earned Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
