Amponsah, Azamati and Seaneke Set to Compete at the 13th Annual African Games

ACCRA, GHANA- Three West Texas A&M Track and Field athletes, William Amponsah, Benjamin Azamati and Abraham Seaneke, are set to represent their home country of Ghana in the African Games this week. The 13th edition of the African Games will be used as an official qualifier for the XXXIII Olympic Games Paris 2024
 
The 13th annual African Games are competing for the first time in Accra, Ghana, the nation's capital, for 10-15 days of contests consisting of brain and brawn by 5,000 elite athletes and coaches from fifty-five African countries in 29 selected sports. 
 
Set to compete at the invitational only African Games is current West Texas A&M student-athlete William Amponsah and two WT Buff alumni, Benjamin Azamati and Abraham Seaneke. All three athletes will be competing for their country of Ghana. 
 
Amponsah is a junior student-athlete who has made a splash in his first season in the maroon and white. He went undefeated in the fall cross country season winning all six of his races including the NCAA Division II Individual National Championship. Amponsah has had one indoor season in his career, the 2023-2024 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship season that just finished this month. He broke WT school records in the 3,000-meter (8:02.67) and 5,000-meter (13:40.16). He is set to compete in the 2024 NCAA Divivion II Outdoor season this spring. 
 
Benjamin Azamati just graduated in December of 2023. He ran for two seasons for the Buffs before turning professional and signing a contract with Asics his junior year. Azamati is most notably recognized as a contender for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he qualified for the 100-meter running 9.97 seconds in 2021. At the Texas Relays, Azamati became the ninth fastest man in the world in the 100-meter running 9.90 seconds. He's already made it through the first round of the African Games men's 100-meters and is set to compete this afternoon at 12:55 p.m. CT (5:55 p.m. GMT) in the semi-finals. 
 
Abraham Seaneke is an alumnus of West Texas A&M University having graduated in 2022. Seaneke held the WT records in indoor (7.59m) and outdoor (7.75m) long jump. He qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with his personal best jump of 8.06m but due to Covid-19 was unable to travel and compete for this Olympics. He is a record holder in the triple jump, long jump and high jumps in Greater Accra, Ghana. 
 
Benjamin Azamati has made it through the first rounds of the men's 100-meter taking first in his heat (10.54). He will run in the second heat of the men's 100-meter semi-finals today, March 18th at 12:55 p.m. CT. Finals will be March 19th at 1:20 p.m. CT. 
 
William Amponsah will run in the 10,000-meter finals tomorrow, March 19th at 3:35 p.m. CT. 
 
Abraham Seaneke will jump in the long jump finals on Thursday, March 21st at 11:05 a.m. CT.
