CANYON, Texas āĀ Coming off its first Lone Star Conference victory of the season, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team looks to avenge an early-season loss to the Midwestern State Mustangs on Saturday. The Buffs (3-6-4, 1-2-3 LSC) and Mustangs (9-1-3, 4-1-1 LSC) are slated to kick off at 1:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.

No one is a more familiar opponent to West Texas A&M than Midwestern State as Wednesday's matchup marks the 63
rd time the two programs have played each other. The Mustangs lead the all-time series with the Buffs 34-23-5 in a series that dates to 1991. Midwestern State has won the last four contests including a 2-1 victory over WT earlier this season. The Buffs are 1-4 in the last five meetings and 4-5-1 in the last 10.

The Mustangs enter Wednesday's match with a 9-1-3 overall record and 4-1-1 in Lone Star Conference Play. Reigning D2CCA National Player of the Year Mere Escobar leads the Midwestern State offense with 30 points on 12 goals and a team-leading six assists while Samuele Muroni follows with six goals of his own. Liam Prichard follows Escobar in assists as the senior has record five on the season. In goal, Daniel Robles and Jakob Stone have split time with Robles earning the nod recently. As a unit, the two goalkeepers have combined for 17 goals allowed and 34 saves on 130 shots faced for 1.31 goals against average, a .667 save percentage, and four shutouts.

West Texas A&M men's soccer snapped a six-game winless streak as the Buffs took down rival Lubbock Christian 1-0 on Wednesday night at the LCU Soccer & Track Facility. In the eighth minute, WT earned a penalty kick after Pettigrew took out Mohammed inside the box. Although

Daniel Burton put a shot on frame followed by another save on Landais' shot. On the rebound,
Philip Leano flew in to make sure the Buffs wouldn't be denied on the attack. Leano, returning to the pitch for the first time this season, netted the first goal in his career at WT. With 13 minutes to play, Southerington came up with his biggest save of the night as Justin Martinez broke free for a one-on-one opportunity. Martinez went low on his shot, but Southerington cut down the angle to make a kick save

Butch Lauffer is in his 34th season as head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University. As the longest tenured head coach in WT history, Lauffer has coached the men to 31 consecutive non-losing seasons and the women to 12-plus victories in 12 seasons. Lauffer has recorded a 379-177-58 (.665) record at the helm of the Buffs with a 569-244-74 (.683) overall record at WT.

LSC PRESEASON POLL
Reigning Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament champion Midwestern State received all but one of the 33 possible first-place votes for a total of 362 points. WT finished second in the voting with a total of 303 points followed by St. Mary's with 275 points and a first-place vote. Dallas Baptist (266) and Texas A&M International (211) round out the top five with Lubbock Christian (179), Oklahoma Christian (174), Eastern New Mexico (136), and UT Tyler (124) following. St. Edward's (113) and Sul Ross State (35) finish out the poll.

Midwestern State's Mere Escobar and Juan Galindo were tabbed the LSC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while St. Mary's Johnny Thurbin earned Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
