TAKING FIRST
Four student-athletes placed first in four individual events with
Aziz Mohammed in the 800-meter,
Joseph Oreva in the long jump,
Sarah Koomson in the mile and undefeated runner
William Amponsah in the mile.
Amponsah is now two-for-two in taking home first place in the indoor track season. He adds this to his already six wins in the cross country season, where he was also crowned National Champion, to become the only undefeated West Texas A&M athlete this year. Amponsah ran the mile in 4 minutes, 9.83 seconds to defeat the 15-field opponents. He ran right behind South Plains freshman Divian DuPloy before making his move six laps in to pass his opponent and take a two second win over teammate
Enrico Oddone. Oddone kept with Amponsah's pace throughout to narrowly miss out on first (4:11.77). Amponsah has the seventh fastest WT time and becomes the first to make the top-10 in the mile since 2018.
Freshman
Sarah Koomson took a staggering lead in the mile and never let up to finish first in 4 minutes, 59.4 seconds. Koomson lapped almost every athlete in the 16-person race besides second place teammate,
Betty Bajika (5:05.40) and UTEP senior Ruth Jerubet. Koomson sits in sixth all-time in WT history with current teammates
Eleonora Curtabbi,
Florance Uwajeneza and Bajika also having top-10 times in the event.
Junior
Joseph Oreva took first in the long jump with a distance of 7.51m/24-7.75". Oreva has had a long-awaited return to indoor after having to bow out of the indoor national championship last season due to injury. Oreva was joined in the top six by teammate
Cecil Dosoo who also hit a personal best distance of 6.89m/22-7.25".
Sophomore transfer
Aziz Mohammed ran the distance in the 800-meter (1:51.67) to take first over fellow teammate
Prince Mcabelo who was outpaced by less than a second (1:52.01). Both Mohammed and Mcabelo went on to compete on the 4x400 relay together and placed eighth in the event.
TOP-TEN IN WT
Five student-athletes broke into the top-10 in WT history with transfer sophomore
James Dadzie leading the way with a top time in the 60-meter dash. Dadzie sits third all-time with a 6.58 effort. He is now the only other athlete in the top-5 of the event with former Buff, turned pro,
Benjamin Azamati. Dadzie made his debut in the maroon and white today, with his most recent competition happening this past summer in Budapest at the World Championships where he represented team Ghana with Buff teammate
Isaac Botsio.
Fellow teammates now in the top-10 are senior
Joey Zimmerman who is second in the pole vault with a height of 3.68m making it her personal best by .31 meters. Zimmerman broke into the top-10 with her prior best coming in 2023. Zimmerman is the only Lady Buff pole vaulter to make the top-10 since 2016. Amponsah is set for seventh in the mile, Koomson is sixth in the mile and Oreva is fifth in the long jump.
