CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team begins its postseason journey on Friday afternoon as the Buffs take on Dallas Baptist in the semifinal round of the Lone Star Conference tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.

After defeating Dallas Baptist 2-0 in Dallas on Oct. 14, WT is 16-0 all time against the Patriots. In a series that dates back to 1992, the Buffs have outscored DBU 57-8 including 10 shutouts.

SCOUTING DALLAS BAPTIST
The Patriots come off a thrilling draw with Texas A&M International in the quarterfinal round where DBU advanced on penalty kicks, 4-3. Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Peyton Voelker leads the Patriots with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists while Gavyn Rosales follows with 18 points on six goals and six assists. Patrick Banich and Alexander Knepper have split starts in goal with Knepper leading by 20 minutes. The two have combined for 27 goals allowed and 46 saves on 202 shots faced for a 1.48 goals-against average and .630 save percentage.

BUTCH LAUFFER
Butch Lauffer is in his 33rd season as head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University. As the longest tenured head coach in WT history, Lauffer has coached the men to 30 consecutive non-losing seasons and the women to 12-plus victories in 12 seasons. Lauffer has recorded a 377-171-53 (.671) record at the helm of the Buffs with a 566-238-79 (.688) overall record at WT.

LAST TIME OUT
WT had its senior day spoiled by the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's on Nov. 1. After the Buffs took the lead in the ninth minute, the Hilltoppers scored two goals. WT tied up the game in the 42
nd minute on
Rotem Weiss' first goal of the season, but St. Edward's took the lead once again a minute later. The Hilltoppers extended their lead in the 58
th minute to take a 4-2 lead.
Matteo Landais netted a penalty kick with 20 seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough.

A LOOK AT THE BRACKET
In the quarterfinal round, fifth-seeded Oklahoma Christian pulled off an upset of fourth-seeded St. Mary's, 2-1. Third-seeded Dallas Baptist and sixth-seeded Texas A&M International ended in a 1-1 draw in the other quarterfinal match, but the Patriots advanced on penalty kicks.

No. 2 seed West Texas A&M takes on the Patriots at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal game. Top-seeded, and No. 2-nationally, Midwestern State faces Oklahoma Christian in the second semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. The winners of the semifinals will move on to the Lone Star Conference Championship at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

A LOOK AHEAD
A win would put the Buffs in their first Lone Star Conference Championship since WT won the tournament in Spring 2021.
