Swoopes Breaks School Record at UNM Team Open

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M continued to their impressive start to the 2022 indoor season at the UNM Team Open and Texas Tech Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 29.  Senior Zada Swoopes broke her own school record as the nationally ranked men's and women's teams picked up 10 provisional marks on Saturday, totaling 14 on the weekend.

Swoopes had an impressive season debut as she broke the program record in the weight throw and registered another Top 10 mark.  The senior finished third in a field of 34 with a mark of 58-10.0 (17.93m) on her second and third attempts of the event.  She also finished third in the shot put with the third-best mark in school history, 52-9.25 (16.08m).  
 
Jayna Lueders and Joey Zimmerman each finished 21st in the pole vault as the pair cleared the 10-1.25 (3.08) mark. 
 
On the Buffs side, Chance Martelli finished eighth in the 200-meter finals with a personal best 22.51 while also setting a new personal best in the 400-meter at 49.96.  Gabriel Imery cleared 14-6.25 (4.43) in his third attempt to finish 18th.  Ray Dixon reached a 59-3.0 (18.06m) mark on his second attempt in the weight throw to finish second.

Butare Rugenerwa registered the second-fastest indoor time in school history in the 800-meter run as the Amarillo product ran 1:49.69 to finish third behind Texas Tech's Marco Vilca and Texas A&M's Caden Norris.  Abdelrahim Mahgoub and Brian Nganga also finished in the Top 15 for the Buffs in the competition. 
 
Innocent Murwanashyaka was the top finisher for WT in the men's mile with a personal best 4:18.56 to finish sixth while Harry Louradour finished 11th in 4:20.50.  Peniel Richard recorded a provisional mark on his third attempt in the triple jump at 47-8.5 (14.54m) to finish 10th.
 
Jeremiah Lauzon stayed consistent in the 200-meter as he ran another Top 10 mark after running the third-fastest time in school history at 21.17 to finish eighth. William Frobe was the second top finisher in the event for WT at 21.47 to finish 14th
 
A pair of Lady Buffs recorded Top 10 finishes in the mile as Grace Dwyer and Betty Bajika each set new personal-bests in the event.  Dwyer finished fifth with a time of 5:11.65 while Bajika finished ninth in 5:18.87.  
 
Miriam Zanovello recorded a personal best in the triple jump as the Chivasso, Italy native recorded a 41-8.5 (12.71) mark to finish fifth with Taylor Nelloms closely behind in sixth at 441-8.0 (12.70m). 
 
Sprinters Leah Belfield and DeOndra registered a pair of Top 25 finishes in the 200-meter dash in a field of 78 with Belfield finishing 21st in 24.74 and Green 25th in 24.89.
