Top-10 Showdown Awaits No. 5 West Texas A&M in Wichita Falls

CANYON, Texas – The No. 5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M set out to take on region-rival No. 10 Midwestern State in a Top 10 showdown on Wednesday night.  The Buffs and Mustangs go head-to-head at 7 p.m. at Stang Park in Wichita Falls.

SERIES HISTORY
WT and MSU meet on the pitch for the first time since April 12 in the Lone Star Conference Championship match where Buffs claimed the title with a 1-0 victory.  Wednesday's match marks the 56th meeting between the two programs with Midwestern State leading the all-time series against the Buffs (20-31-4).  
 
SCOUTING #10 MUSTANGS
Midwestern State (6-0-0, 0-0-0 LSC) has outscored opponents 21-3 on 16.2 shots per match, averaging 3.5 goals which ranks first in the conference.  The Mustangs offense is led by Trevor Amann with six goals and a team-high 14 points.  Marc-Antoine Huzen has registered all 540-minutes between the post for MSU allowing just three goals with 16 saves for a .842 save-percentage. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
Buffs moved to 4-0-0 on the season after a 2-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday with both goals scored by Giancarlo Saldana.  WT had a 26-13 shot advantage with 13 landing on frame to NNU's two with eight Buffs registering shots led by Dennis Herrera with a career-high eight shots followed by Saldana with seven.  Tom Miles was awarded the victory and is now 3-0-0.
 
A LOOK AT THE HERD
On offense, the Buffs average four goals a match on 19.3 shots which ranks first in the conference including a .455 shot-on-goal percentage.  Saldana has scored a team-high six goals followed by Stefan Andjelic with two while Ben Siri leads the offense with three assists.  WT's defense has limited opponents to 8.5 shots per match with WT's keepers allowing just three goals with six saves for a .600 save-percentage. 
 
USC DIVISION II TOP-25
WT moved to fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Men's Soccer Top-25 rankings ranking in the Top 5 for the first time since September of 2019.  The Buffs and Midwestern State are the only programs from the Lone Star Conference in the national standings.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Giancarlo Saldana was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career after recording his fifth career brace for WT against NNU.  The junior now has 16 career goals including seven game winners.  
 
BUTCH LAUFFER
Butch Lauffer enters his 31st season as head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University. As the longest tenured head coach in WT history, Lauffer has coached the men to 29 consecutive non-losing seasons and the women to 12-plus victories in 12 seasons. Lauffer has recorded a 354-157-39 (.679) record at the helm of the Buffs with a 543-224-56 (.693) overall record at WT.
