CANYON, Texas – The #10 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M ran their win streak to 11 games on Saturday afternoon as they finished off a Lone Star Conference sweep of the St. Mary's Rattlers at Wilder Park.
WT hits the road for LSC action next weekend as they head down Interstate 27 for a three-game series with the Lubbock Christian Chaps starting on Thursday night at Hays Field.
GAME 1
The Rattlers took advantage of a WT error in the third to plate a pair of runs for the early 2-0 lead.
The Buffs responded in the fifth as
Cade Engle ledoff the frame with a ground-rule double to right center followed two batters later by a
Keone Givens RBI single to make it 2-1.
WT did more damage in the sixth as
Will Fuenning doubled to left field with one out followed by a walk to
Kyle Moos, Engle would double to right with two outs to score a pair followed by a
Jonah Gonzales RBI single thru the left side to give WT the 4-2 lead.
The Rattlers cut into the lead in the seventh as they took advantage of a failed pickoff attempt with no outs as Derek Mueller grounded out to second to score Ryan McGowen and cut the lead to 4-3. StMU made it interesting in the ninth with the tying and leading run on base with one out before
Justin Zamora entered the game and forced a popup in foul territory and a grounder to third for his first save of the year.
Mathieu Gauthier picked up the win (6-2) for the Buffs, allowing two unearned runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts in his six innings of work.
GAME 2
WT got on the board first in the finale as
Kennedy Badgett doubled down the right field line to score Engle followed by a
Ryan Johnson two-run double to make it 3-0, the Buffs weren't done yet as Fuenning doubled to left to score Johnson followed by a Moos triple off of the right field wall and a Rattler error for the 6-0 lead.
The Buffs added to their lead in the sixth as Engle scored from third on a wild pitch with one out followed by a
Zach Kaminkow RBI single to left to plate Givens and force a call to the St. Mary's bullpen. An error with two outs scored a run and kept the inning alive followed by a Moos two-run triple to right to make it 11-0.
Todd Danzeisen picked up the win (4-0) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in his five innings of work.
