#12 Buffs Split a Sunday Doubleheader with Cameron

CANYON, Texas – The #12 West Texas A&M Buffaloes scored a combined 33 runs on Sunday afternoon as they split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with the Cameron Aggies at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.

The two teams wrap-up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the finale scheduled for 1 p.m.

GAME ONE
The Buffs got on the board in the top of the first as Eric Ortiz, Ryan Johnson and Izaiah Madrid all drew bases loaded walks for an early 3-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the fourth as Ortiz singled down the right field line with the bases loaded to score Justin Robinson and Cade Engle followed by a Reese Patterson sac fly to right to drive in Keone Givens and make it 6-0.

Cameron got on the board in the home half of the fourth as they took advantage of the windy conditions with a sac fly to right by Jordan Harrison to score Nik Sanchez followed by a Sebastian Figgs two-run double and a Erik Ohman two-run homerun to right center to make. The Aggies weren't done yet as another WT error plated two more followed by a bases clearing double by Ryan Carter to make it 10-6.

The Buffs cut into the lead in the sixth as Reese Patterson singled down the left field line to score Jonah Gonzales but CU responded in the bottom of the frame with a Carter two-run shot to right at 12-6. WT cut into the lead in the seventh with a Gonzales double to right to score Kyle Moos followed by a Givens two-rule single to make it 12-10. Cameron responded again in the home half with a Jayce Clem two-run shot to right at 14-10.

WT cut into the lead again in the top of the eighth with an Abel Pena pinch-hit single to score Moos but the Buffs stranded a pair to still trail 14-11. The Buffs would make it interesting in the ninth, taking advantage of an error with two outs before stranding a pair for the 14-12 loss.

Zach Dixon picked up the loss (1-1) for the Buffs, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in his 3.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO
The Buffs wasted little time getting on the board in the nightcap as they played three runs on five hits in the opening frame on a Will Fuenning two-run double and a Johnson RBI single to right for the 3-0 lead. CU plated their first run of the night in the second as Kalen Hughes doubled down the right field line to score Carter and make it 3-1.

WT added to their lead in the top of the third as Cade Engle drew a bases loaded walk to run the lead to 4-1. The Buffs continued to hit in the fourth as Patterson and Kennedy Badgett drove in runs with no outs followed by a Madrid RBI walk at 7-1. Justin Robinson welcomed a new Aggie arm with an RBI single to left followed by an Engle sacrifice fly and a Fuenning bases clearing triple to the gap in left center to make it 13-1. Fuenning would score on a passed ball to continue the inning as the Buffs finished the frame with 16 runs on 13 hits highlighted by a Givens grand slam to make it 20-1.

WT wasn't done yet as they took advantage of a CU error in the fifth to score Zach Kaminkow who led off the frame with a triple to extend the lead to 21-1. Mathieu Gauthier picked up the win (2-1) for the Buffs, allowing one earned run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts in his four innings of work.
