ANOTHER TOUGH ONE
For the second straight Saturday, WT saw a 4-1 halftime lead disappear en route to a 5-4 overtime loss to Texas Woman's.
Hannah Kelley-Lusk was on-target twice in the first half with
Emily Avila and Samantha Silvestre both finding the back of the net as well. TWU scored three goals in the second half including two in the final five minutes to send it to extra time where Abigail Martinez would score the golden goal in the 99th minute.
A LOOK AT ST. EDWARD'S
After a slow start to the season, St. Edward's has won four of their last five matches to enter Wednesday's contest at 7-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in LSC play.
The Hilltoppers are led by Nick Cowell, the winningest coach in NCAA Division II history among active coaches with 450 wins. Prior to the spring season, he had led SEU to 14 straight 10-win seasons.
The Hilltoppers have scored 18 goals this season (1.5/game) including a season-high four in their win over UT Permian Basin. Sarah Preston is the top golf scorer for SEU as the senior midfielder has scored five goals on 13 shots, six of those on-target. The Oviedo, Fla. native scored back-to-back braces against Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M International earlier this month. She has also played a team-high 1,066 minutes.
Katie Gay has also scored four goals including a brace in SEU's dominant victory over UTPB. Sarah Gunderson is the team leader in assists with four.
Abby Carlson and Meghan Dunning have both featured in goal this season combining for 42 saves and five shutouts along with a goals against percentage of .712. Dunning got the start making one save before being taken off at halftime.
THE SERIES
Wednesday will be the 11th all-time meeting in a series that began back on Sept. 10, 2000. The Lady Buffs hold a 5-3-2 advantage in the series but the Hilltoppers are in the midst of a four-game unbeaten streak.
HASN'T HAPPENED TOO OFTEN
For just the fifth time since 2015, WT lost a game when it scored first. Prior to Saturday's heartbreaker to TWU, the Lady Buffs were 62-4-4(.914) when taking the lead.
WT also dropped to 26-4-1 (.883) when Kelley-Lusk scores, something she has down a league-best 16 times this season.
A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
Even with losing two straight games, WT ranks in the Top 10 in NCAA Division II women's soccer in four different categories. They rank third in scoring offense, fifth in total goals, sixth in points per game and seventh in total points.
Individually, Kelley-Lusk leads the nation in four different categories. The senior from Farmington, N.M. ranks first in goals per game, points per game, goals and points.
SPEAKING OF OFFENSE
The Lady Buffs have scored 44 goals through 12 games, the most they have scored since scoring 47 in 2009. WT actually owns the LSC record for most goals scored in a single season with 83, set back in 2008.
CLOSING IN ON SECOND
Kelley-Lusk is two goals shy of tying Elisabeth Markussen for the second-most in program history. With those two goals, she would move into a tie for second in points with Markussen, who finished her career with 49 goals and 20 assists.
SECOND HALF STRUGGLES
The Lady Buffs have outscored LSC opponents 17-4 in the first half this season but have been outscored in the second half by four goals. Eight of the 13 second half goals they have conceded have come in losses to DBU and TWU.
They have also produced 50 more shots in the first half, 76-26, compared to only seven more in the second 45 minutes, 63-56.
