AFFESSI NEEDS A BIGGER TROPHY CASE
Fatim Affessi is going to need a bigger room for all of her awards after being named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA DII Female Athlete of the Week. She was also named the Lone Star Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week after her record breaking performance at the TTU Corky Classic.Â
Â
The senior broke her own conference and school record in the long jump with a mark of 20-10.75 (6.37m) on her first attempt of the competition. That is the farthest jump indoors since 2015 and is the sixth-farthest jump in NCAA DII history. She also became the third student-athlete to have multiple jumps over 20-8 (6.30m) indoors.Â
Â
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
Affessi wasn't the only WT student-athlete to rewrite the record books last week as
Nicolai Hartling and
Ray Dixon both broke schools records. Hartling became the fastest Buff over 600 yards as the senior ran 1:11.06 to shatter
Arnaud Taki's record that was set in December. Dixon's throw of 56-4.5 (17.18m) in the weight throw not only gave him the school record but also made him the first Buff to throw over 17 meters in the event.Â
Â
GIVING IT ANOTHER CHANCE
Nele Heinrich, fresh off her 600-yard victory at Texas Tech, is scheduled to compete in the 800-meters on Saturday. In December, the three-time All-American tied her personal best in the event running 2:17.54 to finish second at the Crimson & Gold Invitational. The senior will be joined by freshman Caitlyn Speegle and
Kylah Holland.Â
Â
SPRINTERS LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT
The Lady Buffs have nine student-athletes registered for the 60-meter dash highlighted by
Leah Belfield and
Kayla Wilson. Belfield ranks first in the LSC and 13th nationally after running 7.60 in her collegiate debut en route to LSC weekly honors. Wilson ran 7.66 at the same meet, which is the second-fastest time in the conference and 21st national.Â
Â
On the men's side,
Desmond Aryee is one of nine Buffs in the 60m as the freshman ran 6.87 in Lubbock last week.
Quinton Sansing is scheduled to compete as well, marking the first time he has competed in the event since the 2018 LSC Championships.Â
Â
UP NEXT
WT will compete in the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M. and Wendy's Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan. next week.
