#4 Buffs Hit the Road to Take On #19 Midwestern State

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team hits the road for a nonconference matchup with #19 Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas, on Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m at Stang Park.
 
SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE
Midwestern State register a 5-1 overall record (1-0 LSC) after defeating Oklahoma Christian, 3-0, in the opening round of conference play led by second year head coach Michael Meachum.  The Mustangs hold a 21-2-3 overall record since Meachum took over for long-term coach Doug Elder. 
 
Offensively, MSU Texas averages 2.0 goals per game on 16.5 shots for a .121 shot percentage.  The Mustangs are led by redshirt-junior midfielder Sebastian Venegas with two goals and one assist for five points while sophomore defender Adam Conway follows with two goals.  Seven other Midwestern State players have contributed each scoring a goal.  
 
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Lampe has picked up all five wins between the pipes for the Mustangs, including four shutouts.  The D2CCA Second Team All-American selection tallies 15 saves (.833) and has allowed only three goals this season (0.50).  
 
THE SERIES
Saturday's match marks the 52nd meeting between the Buffs and Mustangs with Midwestern State leading the series 18-29-4 dating back to their first-ever meeting on Sept. 17, 1991.
 
THE LAST MEETING
In their last meeting, WT and MSU Texas last went head-to-head in the Heartland Conference Championship game in the 2018 season hosted by the Mustangs in Wichita Falls, Texas.  The Buffs claimed their first Heartland title in a 5-3 penalty thriller against the Mustangs.  Alexander Vencel received Most Valuable Player honors after he registered four saves on 11 shots.
 
COACH LAUFFER
Butch Lauffer enters his 29th season as the head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University.  Lauffer is the longest tenured coach in WTAMU history in an acclaimed career starting in 1991.  The Texas Christian alum led the Buffs to 17 victories last season for one of the best seasons in program history, setting a new record for most wins in a single season. With the Buffs, Lauffer has recorded a 337-137-37 record with the Buffs and a 527-214-54 overall record at WT.
 
LAST TIME OUT  
The Buffs defeated the No. 9 Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night to open Lone Star Conference action with a 3-1 home victory.  WT's defense limited the Greyhounds to only four shots with three on frame.
 
Eastern New Mexico scored in the ninth minute to jump on the board early but the Buffs responded after Jean-Luc Ramdin scored his second goal of the season on a rebound from the Greyhounds goalkeeper.  Kenny Brown added another two goals to secure the Buffs first victory against a nationally-ranked opponent.
 
Colin Burgiel earned his second win of the season, allowing only one goal with two saves on four shots. 
 
STANDING NATIONALLY
WT moved up one spot to No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top-25 Poll released on Tuesday, breaking their highest national-standing since 2013 at No. 5.  The Buffs are the highest ranked team in the conference ahead of No. 9 Eastern New Mexico and No. 19 Midwestern State.  
 
BUFF LEADERS
Sophomore Kenny Brown leads the Buffs with four goals for eight points after his performance against Eastern New Mexico.  Jean-Luc Ramdin and Stefan Andjelic follow with two goals each for a combined four points.
